So if you get a decent package like let's say $30k you are not eligible simply because your severance package is considered earnings and more than what you would get in EI?

I'm asking cuz I am feeling I am cheated in the most annoying way possible. My fil got laid off in April and I told him to apply for EI. He did and told me he was denied which I didn't think was possible. Now they are telling us we need to help them pay some bills. Why? Is it my fault you bought a home with no down payment and pay 2k in mortgage payments alone every month? Is it my fault you guys are trying to keep up with the Jones' while in your late 50's and why should I be pinching every penny to save for my future and see you guys living this fake rich life and even worse fund it? That's BS. I am not going to contribute to it anymore...I told my husband if he wants to give them, its up to him but I will no longer be cautious and thinking twice about buying myself that top I see or going out with my friends when his family is willingly going to take our money just to make their house look good. So they complain all the time about money, we go there last weekend, they have a new gazebo in the backyard they claim they bought end of season but the cousin said no they bought it last month, they have a new bbq and all these toys for the grandkids in the backyard. Sure its nice to have things, but none of them are necessities...so do not complain about money if you can spend it like that. His mom told him well your dad is spending some of his severance pay as he is depressed...he will be even more depressed when they lose their house cuz this spending makes no sense. Now my sil is saying they need to downgrade cuz all her earnings are going into the house and has no penny to even breath. She now realizes when her folks are gone she won't be able to survive on her own because all her life she has been investing in the moms dream life.
Why are people like that? Be thankful you have a roof over your heard and a family around you. argh* Sorry to let it out like that...I have been so stressed over it. I think that's why my period is soo ridiculously late

Amy, it's really unfortunate that your husband's parents are putting you through that, as well as your husband.
I know when I got my severance package when I was on EI (but I was on mat leave, so I don't know if this would apply in this case as well, but.......), I phoned in to report it, and they put my EI on hold for the three months that I got severance for, and had a three month extension put on at the end of my claim.
I know parental and mat leave are a little different than regular EI benefits, so maybe someone else can shed some better light on the situation.
Oh, and I didn't think that they were refusing ANYONE for EI right now. Afterall, EI claims were way up last time I heard.SwagBucks.com - the premiere digital dollar. Earn SwagBucks to redeem for great prizes. Amazon.ca are available here!

Amy, sorry to hear the bs you have to go thru. With EI, he can still apply for it. Umm, how to do I explain this....
It's based on what they determine your severance pay was and how it compared to your annual wages. let say you earn $30k a year and your severance pay was $30k, you can apply for EI after a year, and if you received more, the longer wait to apply. Basically, you have to live off your severance pay before you can get EI.
Does that make sense?

It's actually not my husband who is putting me through it. He is stuck between a rock and a hard place as he knows if he doesnt help they will hold to it to him forever, but he kinda doesnt want to help either cuz he sees how silly they are with money too. They have another son who has two incomes but they don't dare ask him, why I will never know. They say well you guys have a house and have money (how do you know what we have). The others own a condo so what...we all have mortgages...I have two kids one starting private school in Sept.
I am going to make sure I do my research on this EI thing too....

ok so here was the details marjem maybe you can help with this. He was given 30k package but he opted only half as severance the rest in RRSP investment not to be taxed off so the 15k he took was lump sum. His income usually was 50k
