I could be wrong but with bonus points offers, I do not think they allow you to buy gift cards. It is usually printed on the website when you click on the points offer -- more details there.

I didn't get bonus points for buying GC, I redeemed points and spent them on GC. You are correct that if you have an offer spend $$ and get xx no of points, it excludes GCs and phone top-up cards...
