I was too lazy to bake a b'day cake for someone special here, but I found the family fav ( Black Forest ) at RCSS for $13.97 ( GASP! , I know....but as I said I was too lazy to make one ) so there was a young lad stocking things nearby the bakery, and I guess he saw me looking around for a bakery employee.
He asked if I needed any help and I asked if there were any bakery gals around. He looks around and seemed to think they were not available and asked again if he could assist me. I thought to myself it's not likely he'll even know what I want, but I asked if they had anyone that could write on one of those flat chocolate wafers a Happy Birthday greeting so I could put it on the cake I was buying.
I tried to follow that up with a description of the chocolate wafer, he stopped me saying " I know what you mean , I can do it for you " .....well.....uh. hmmmm. I must have nodded or something because he goes and gets plastic gloves on, grabs the wafer, asks me the spelling of the b'day person's name and proceeds.
I stood there dumbfounded that this unassuming ( did I mention young lad? ) who seemed to be the person stocking shelves nearby was that capable!
It actually looked better than anything I could write. He put it in a huge protective clam shell container and priced it at $1.00
So I mentioned that I hope he was never going to waste his talent stocking shelves, he should be creating things in a bakery!
Did I ever judge that book wrong.

How wonderful for both of you...you got your wafer, and he received your gratitude!
I hope you call the manager of the whole store and let him know how helpful this lad was...we need people like that and if he's still in school, he's the guy who should hang onto his job.
Two nice stories today! On a roll!!

well I did it! I called the manager and passed along the kind of customer service I received from this employee and how thrilled I was not only in his ability but in the way he chose not to ignore a customer who looks like they need assistance. He assured me that he would take the time to acknowledge this lad himself. Fair is fair, I have at times called to complain about something, so I should also call when I am pleased!

Good for you walkonby! It's rather rare (or so it seems) to see young people work hard just because it's the right thing to do. We all should encourage that!

I find the grocery clerks are very helpful too, not to that extent. That young man was one of very few, Thanks for calling the manager he deserved the recognition.

You are so cute Walks, your stories are always so descriptive, like we have a front row seat to what happened. Here is another compliment, you should be a storyteller. Thank you for sharing and awesome 1.00, how nice. Lovely story to tell the Birthday boy-girl too.
