    SC Forum Rules

    General Rules

Participation in SmartCanucks.ca is a privilege given to those who follow the usage rules outlined below. By participating in this forum you are agreeing to be bound by these rules. Failure to observe these rules may result in your post(s) being edited, negatively moderated or deleted. Smart Canucks reserves the right to ban abusers from the site and possibly seek legal action against them.

While these rules cover most common situations, they cannot anticipate everything. Consequently we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate. The Administrator and Moderators reserve the right to edit the above rules for clarity and to address new issues for the benefit of all Smart Canucks members.

If you disagree with a decision taken by a moderator, you may appeal to Boo Radley

    • Each member is allowed one login account. Registering with multiple accounts is not allowed.
    • Members should each have their own account, account sharing is not allowed.
    • You may not log into another user's account for any reason.

    Posting

    • Please search before posting to see if a thread has been posted already and provide a clear title for your thread in the correct forum.
    • While debating and discussion is fine, we will not tolerate rudeness, profanity, insulting posts, personal attacks, purposeless or inflammatory posts. Our moderators' decision is final in these matters. If you feel you are attacked, or see a personal attack, please use the report button to the bottom left of the post to contact our moderators.
    • Multiple or repeated posting in order to increase your post count is not allowed.
    • Spamming and trolling is not allowed. This includes using the forum, email, visitor messages, blog comments, picture comments and private message systems to spam other members. If you come across these posts on the forums, report using the (pic) report button to the bottom left of the post. Replying just encourages trolls and spammers.
    • We reserve the right to remove offensive posts without notice.
    • Links to competitor sites are not allowed, even if they follow referral/signature rules.
    • Do not attempt to bypass the filter for banned words or sites.
    • Advertising is not allowed, if you would like to advertise on our site, please contact an administrator.
    • Link shorteners, especially paid per click ones are not allowed, even when the link follows the signature link rules. You MUST be able to mouse over the link to see where it ultimately leads.
    • Voting Requests: Only ask for votes in the "request votes" section in contests. DO NOT make threads or comments in other areas asking for votes. These posts will be deleted without notice. This includes private messaging.
    • Links to personal blogs must be posted in the Your Personal Blog section (http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/your-personal-blog/) and must include a link back to Smart Canucks and must not be competing sites.
    • Moderators will not usually contact a member to inform them of moderation of their posts, if you have a question regarding why your post was moderated, please contact an Administrator

    Signatures & Avatars

    • You may have two (2) regular sized font text links in your signature, they may be referral links provided that they do not link to competitor sites.
    • Commercial banners for PTC/GTP or referral sites are not permitted in signatures.
    • Feel free to contact a moderator to check if a link is allowed in your signature.
    • You may have 1 reasonable sized image (500px wide and 200px tall) in your signature.
    • As of March 21, signatures may not be over 100kb in file size (regular images should not be bigger than this, animation will make file sizes bigger and slow down pages)
    • (Additional regular/small sized smilies/emoticons are also allowed, but on a separate line so as not to stretch the page for those using tablets and netbooks or other smaller screen resolution devices)
    • Tickers are allowed and can be added from TickerFactory (http://www.tickerfactory.com) or similar sites.

    • While Canada Post advertises that mail should take a maximum of a few days across the country, please keep in mind that mail does on occasion take weeks and traders should exercise patience in trades and keep this in mind when trading soon to expire coupons.
    • You may bump your trade thread once every 24 hours regardless of whether it is on the first page or not.
    • You may not ask for Random Acts of Kindness (RAOKs) nor post about losing all of your coupons.
    • Gift Package Trains may not be run without the approval of a trading moderator.

    Smart Canucks Sections

Smart Canucks has sections as well as forums for Deals, Flyers, Coupons and Freebies. While this can seem overwhelming, the sections do add information that gets lost with such busy forums and the forums allow for you to see up to the minute deals.

These sections can be accessed from the green toolbar under the Smart Canucks logo header (please note that this menu may not work if you adblock)

    Name: 2a-coupons.jpg
Views: 2161
Size: 10.1 KB

    Canadian Coupons

This section contains a database of coupons you can print or order as well as e-coupons. While you will find most of these mentioned in the coupon forum, they are often pushed down the page by tearpad finds so the section is a great resource for finding extra websaver coupons to fill your order etc. It is also great for finding the many printable coupons that have long expiry dates and have not been bumped on the forums for some time.

You can browse these coupons by choosing a retailer, brand or category in the drop down menu, or simply look at the Top Coupons link to see the most popular ones which likely have the best savings.

The drop down menu also includes links to the major coupon ordering sites and the trading sections of the forum.

Print Coupon will only show for printable coupons, any that need to be ordered will show Get Coupon.

    Deals Section

    Name: 2b-deals.jpg
Views: 2032
Size: 8.7 KB

The My Deals section, found in the drop down menu in the Deals toolbar, allows you to customise which deals you like to see. If you are interested only in grocery deals from Walmart, you can choose to see these in My Deals. This is an amazing resource for people with a limited number of stores in their area, or for those looking for just baby or deals.

    Name: 2b-mydeals-options.jpg
Views: 2219
Size: 9.8 KB

Simply Click on My Deals and choose Customize My Deals. Type in retailers (selecting from the drop down menu as you type) and which options you would like to see for those stores (Flyers, Member Brags, Deals etc).
Once you have customized your deal options, enter your email in the 'DealMail' box to the right and click subscribe to have updates emailed to you.

    Freebies Section

    Name: 2c-freebies.jpg
Views: 2190
Size: 26.6 KB

Like the other sections, the Freebies Section contains much of the information found on the forums, in a more easily searchable form, especially for older but still valid freebies. This section includes everything from samples, downloads, full size freebies from manufacturers and free codes and pins for promotions.

You can sort by category, or view the most recent, most viewed or most discussed freebies.

    Flyers Section

    Name: 2d-flyers.jpg
Views: 2857
Size: 19.0 KB

While many flyers are posted in the flyers forum, there are many smaller stores which do not get posted. The new Flyers Section includes the stores that do not get posted on the forums. It also is updated with the higher quality versions when often the forums have photos or scans of flyers.

While these sections are very useful, often the forums contain the newest and hottest deals and coupons first, as well as allowing for more discussion. So visit both to make the most of the site and save more money!

How to make a new thread & reply to threads

To make a new thread, find the correct forum for your thread and click the green New Thread button (top left above threads)
    Name: 3a-newthread.jpg
Views: 2161
Size: 10.1 KB

Add your title (should be descriptive including necessary brand name, store, dates etc) and if it is a deal or coupon, add an expiry date so the thread will automatically be archived when it expires.
    Name: 3a-thread-typing.jpg
Views: 2477
Size: 18.3 KB

Features that can help you format your post (add images, polls, quotes etc)
    Name: 3a-thread-options.jpg
Views: 2164
Size: 18.4 KB

    Name: 3a-postingoptions.jpg
Views: 2436
Size: 17.4 KB

When replying, you can quote users from other posts in that thread to clarify which point you are addressing. There is no need to quote the original post.
    Name: 3a-reply-options.jpg
Views: 2606
Size: 15.1 KB

    Searching (general and similar threads)
Before asking a question or posting a deal, please check to see if it has already been posted on the forums. You can search an individual forum by clicking ‘Search This Forum’ in the top right corner above the thread titles or search the whole forum with Advanced Search.
    Name: 3b-searching.jpg
Views: 2197
Size: 15.0 KB
Please note, the search engine in SC is currently undergoing upgrades and some search results will not show. In the mean time, try using Google with the following search term: "site:forum.smartcanucks.ca [what you're looking for]"

    Editing Posts
At the bottom of your posts is an 'Edit Post' button, if you make an error you would like to fix, click on it and it will bring you back to your post. The edit box only has basic controls for formatting text, so you may need to click onto advanced editing, this is also the case if you would like to edit the thread title.

When clicking Edit, you may need to scroll up to find the edit box.

Editing capabilities are disabled when the thread reaches a certain time on the forum, so you will not be able to edit older threads

    Reporting Threads
If you see a problem, a reposted deal, or post in the wrong section and can not expire your thread – use the ‘report’ button to let a mod know. The report button shows under the username on every post. It will bring up a box for you to give reasons for your report. Please note that our moderators are not online 24 hours a day and it may be some time before they see your report.
    Name: 3c-report.jpg
Views: 2030
Size: 6.2 KB

    Expiring Threads
In certain forums (deals, coupons etc, where there is a definite expiry date), you will see the option to expire a post at the bottom of the first post only (beside the PM and quote buttons). If this is your thread, it will be automatically expired. If it is someone else's thread, at least three people need to click to expire it, so don't worry if you click accidentally. It is better to report someone else's thread than have people expire it as a mod can move it to the correct forum or let the person know why it was expired.

    Wikis
For certain threads, like store closings or flash sales, it is helpful for all members to be able to edit the thread. When starting a new thread, you will be given the option to make the thread a wiki so it is editable by all members of SC. If you decide to make it a wiki later, scroll down past the text in the first post and choose ‘Turn to Wiki Thread’

    Abbreviations
Often people ask what do all the short forms mean (like DH / FPC / HV etc) – there is a list of abbreviations here: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/212015-...-forms-canada/

If you are new to both couponing and the forums, this forum is a great place to start (Shopping Savings & Frugal Living Wiki: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/212767-...ectory-canada/)

    How to Take a Screenshot

Likes vs Thumbs Up vs Reps
There are several ways to thank users for their posts or agree with them without posting.
Thumbs up – appears only on the first post of a thread. You can like the thread, even if you do not necessarily agree with the poster
Like – appears on every post in a thread. Like the comments by a poster. They are sent a notification that you like their post
Rep – appears on every post in a thread. Send the person private comments about their post. Please note that these still must adhere to the rules of SC. Many members use reps just to say hello also.

These likes and thumbs up contribute to our Top Posters Section (accessible by the ‘TOP’ link in the green bar at the top of the page) where you can view the most popular posts.

    Trading
    Rules : See Here
If you are new to couponing or trading, check out our Adopt-A-Newbie thread to get an adoptive 'parent' to help you learn

    Where to get coupons
There are many places to get coupons:
Tearpads are the most common form of coupon and are found in stores usually attached to the shelves.
Inserts are the coupon booklets that come in newspapers (Brandsaver,RedPlum, SmartSource). These are sometimes only found in subscription copies of newspapers and not those sold in stores.
Printables can be printed from emails or websites. Some will require a coupon printer driver to be installed on your computer to ensure you only print the maximum amount allowed. Please note that not all stores accept printables.
Other coupons can be mailed directly from manufacturers, and are often higher value.

There is threads of known coupons here :
Coupon Scan Zone (has scanned versions of available coupons for reference): http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/262910-...n-zone-canada/
    Official Printable Coupons Thread: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/134340-...oupons-canada/
Links to hidden websaver, save.ca and brandsaver coupons: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/215853-...oupons-canada/

    How To Trade

Differences between Trade / Train / RAOK
Smart Canucks has many members who will trade coupons. There are several ways of trading:
Trade – two members swap coupons (or a gift card etc)
Auction - Usually reserved for very high value coupons or when a trader needs a list of high value coupons. Often traders will offer a gift card for best offer of coupons from their wishlist.
Train – 3+ members are put on a ‘train’ together. There are different types of trains
Regular Train – Coupons are put in and the envelope is sent from person to person with people taking from the envelope and adding back coupons
VWT Train – A Virtual Wishlist Train – each member provides a wishlist of coupons they want. You send a certain amount of coupons (or $ amount of coupons) for each person to the conductor and they send you back all the coupons sent for you.
Buddy Train – The conductor will pair you with a mystery buddy. You are given their wishlist and someone else receives yours. They send you a package of coupons directly.
RAOK – Random Act of Kindness – when people send you something for free, no trade required. Sometimes people may see you want them and RAOK them for a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) so it does not cost them anything to send you the coupons. You are not allowed to ask for RAOKs.
Gift Package Trains – these may not be run without the approval of a moderator. They are usually run for holiday seasons and include actual items. There are additional requirements for riding and running these trains which a moderator can explain to you.

Before trading, please read this thread to get an idea of typical trade rates: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/257044-...-2-0-a-canada/
You should also check these threads to see if the user has a lot of trades occurring at once, or if users have had issues with the trader:
    Blacklist Thread: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/103028-...cklist-canada/
Trader Tracking List – Check to see if new traders are trading with a lot of members at once: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/216103-...g-list-canada/

    Trading

There are various ways to trade on Smart Canucks.

The Trading Forum (http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/canadia...ing-discussion) or using the Trader Section from your profile which lists a searchable list of all users here (http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/coupontrade.php). Both of these, as well as the Coupon Trains forum are available from the TRADE section in the green bar top right.
Many people who use the Trader Section update this thread to let people know they have added new coupons (http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/8536-sc...-trade-canada/)

You simply type in the coupons you have to trade and your wishlist and let people contact you (by private message) or look through the lists to see if any of the coupons on others’ trade lists interest you.

    Name: 6a-tradersection.jpg
Views: 2344
Size: 23.5 KB

The list is easily searchable by wishlist and tradelist which is more useful than the forum where a search will bring up both types of list in results. However, the forum is still very useful for Auctions and specialised trades and does get a lot of views. As long as you can maintain your list, you can use both at the same time (eventually these will be merged into one system). Please remember, only 3 threads in the coupon forum at any time.

    Name: 6b-trader-lists.jpg
Views: 2314
Size: 29.4 KB

If interested, Private Message the trader giving exact details of what coupons you are interested in and what you are prepared to give them (or ask what they would like in return).

Often there is some back and forth before a trade is agreed upon, so at the end, after exchanging addresses, send another message that states ‘so I am sending xyz coupons to this address and receiving abc coupons at this address’. That way you can clean up all of the other PMs and have a clear agreement in case of problems.

Please note, if you are a new trader, you may be asked to send first with the other trader sending once they receive your end of the trade.

    Submit Rating

Once you have received your end of the trade you should leave feedback for the user, even if they have not yet received theirs.

    Name: 6c-feedback.jpg
Views: 2176
Size: 27.7 KB

On the feedback page, you can choose to view their feedback for trades or trains, as well as the feedback they left for others from the top tabs. Users will often have more trades than actual feedback numbers since each person you trade with only counts once.

    If you have a problem
While there are many successful trades on Smart Canucks, sometimes things do go wrong.
First, be patient, Canada Post’s guidelines on how long mail takes can be greatly exaggerated and it is not unusual for mail to take a few weeks.

To limit delays in mail, ensure you take your envelope to the post office to be weighed if you are unsure of the amount of postage needed and address your envelope properly to ensure the machine can read it.

    Boo Radley
    123 Smart Canucks Lane
    Interwebs, ON S1C 1S2

The postal code should be on the same line as the city and province and clearly written with space all around it for the machine’s cancelling stamp.

If you have not received your trade after several weeks, contact the other trader.
Only if you can not come to an agreement on resolving the trade
should you contact the Trading Moderator or leave a negative rating.
