I have a question regarding SCOP (actually it is a law here in QC so stores have no choice to respect it): if i buy 2 products of same category, same brandname like sunscreen but they have different bar code (UPC) because of the difference in SPF, lotion versus spray, etc., and if they are scanned higher than advertised price, should I get both of them free because they should not be considered as identical products?
I am planning to send this question to the Customer protection Office here for a clear explanation but hope that anyone having the experience with similar case may help with some answers here

My DH used to be a cashier at a grocery store in BC before joining the military, and only the first item will be free in a SCOP. For example, if you buy 2 of the same items and the first one scans at a different price than the shelf price, you will get the first item free, and then they will adjust the price of the 2nd item to what it's supposed to be. I found that out today.

You are entitled to the first item free per unique UPC, so if each item has a different UPC each item is free. You are entitled to one item free per unique UPC code.

Thanks, that's what I think it should be but of course the store declined my argument. I have tried to find an official statement about this (1st item free per unique UPC) but I could only find at and it is not considered as official explanation. Guess that I might have to write to the Retail Council or Customer Protection Office for an official answer to this matter.

So what happens if an item scans at a higher price, the cashier catches it and immediately manually changes it to the correct price? Do you still get SCOP?

I think thats a question for SCOP .. you should call and ask

And... I also have a question... or a complaint or both

I was at SDM the other day and I saw a giftpack of axe for 9.99, it rang in at 12.99, and I said something .. she went and got the sign and came back. I asked if it was scop (even though i knew it was) and she said it didnt apply to discontinued items (this product was discontinued)... She showed me the sign and in the corner it said discontinued... I guess it was from last christmas gift set.. either way I would have saved money, but was extremely pissed because she said it didnt apply to discontinued items? can anyone clear this up for me? Is this true? and isnt it their faults for not taking down the old sign?
    thanks

In Québec, it's law, but it's good to know that it's valid
    outside of it...

Sorry if this was already asked, does SCOP apply if it is listed in the flyer, but the tag wasn't changed on the shelf? And then the item rings for the price listed on shelf.
For eg: item is listed as $8.99 in flyer. On shelf it is listed $13.99, and it scans in at $13.99
I kno that if i show them the flyer i get it at $8.99, but could i get it for free cuz of SCOP??

Thank you! I saw the term "scop" in some other posts but never knew what it meant.

"According to the scanning code of practice, shouldn't I be getting this free?"

it's helpful if there's a sign/sticker nearby on the counter/register/door that you can point to while saying it.

I bought a pack of Glade Scented Oil Refills awhile ago at Saveonfoods. The sign said 1.24, and it rang up as 7.49. Didn't notice it until I got home. Went back about two weeks later with the receipt and got it for free. If the person you're dealing with is in the know, and wants customers to come back, they'll know about SCOP and give it to you for free. Smart retailers maintain the good will of their customers.

A question for all you coupon experts.
Do coupons apply to the Scanning Code of Practice????

I was at Price Chopper and was doing weekly shopping. I picked up Becel Omega 3 margarine 1.5 lbs(normally $5.99) for $3.03 because I had $1.00 off coupon.

After my bill had been paid I noticed the margarine had been rung up at $5.99 so I went back to the cashier. She confirmed I was charged the wrong price and we waited for a supervisor for the credit.

    I told her I would take a second tub or margarine instead of the cash back so this is the result;

    Paid $5.99 for first tub
    -1.00 Minus Coupon
    Total Paid $4.99

Received $5.99 from Scanning Code of Practice
-3.03 for Second tub of Margarine
    $ 2.96 Cash Back

The question is ....should my coupon have applied to the second tub of margarine since the first should have been free with the scanning code of practice?

Just a question since I am quite happy getting 3 pounds of margarine for $3.00 (unless my math is incorrect).

    Any comments would be appreciated.

You should have gotten this first one free and the ones there after for the advertised sales price. So...

    First Tub
    = $ 0.00
    Second Tub
    = $3.03
    - $1.00 Coupon
    = $2.03

So you should have gotten 3 pounds of margarine for $2.03.
