Need your help on an important question

Hi Everyone,

I know I could probably Google this but I would like to hear from your guys.

Are your kids schools closed for Remembrance Day on Wednesday? The reason I ask is because here they are not and a few of us parents think this sucks and we are probably going to petition the school board over this.

In Ontario, schools used to be closed on Remembrance Day. That changed I *think* in the mid 80s. Now, the schools are open. Let me do some digging & see if I can find out the reasoning behind it.

I'm in NB and I'm pretty sure all the schools are closed here (at least in my city they are)

In Canada, Remembrance Day is a public holiday, as well as being a statutory holiday everywhere except Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Northwest Territories

Im in Ontario andwhen I was in school I have always gone to school on Remembrance Day. I think it should be a holiday though!

Schools used to be closed on Remembrance Day in Ontario. But after a discussion the Ministry of Education petitioned to keep the children in school because, it was found that not many students participated in any of the Remembrance events and considered it a "holiday". What they did do was mandate that EVERY SCHOOL MUST have a Remembrance Day assembly. It's the only assembly mandated in the Education Act. I found that children in elementary schools participated in very moving and meaningful activities at these assemblies, doing research and performing plays, poems, doing artwork and watching movies provided by the Veterans affairs Dept. Veterans were sometimes asked to participate and speak to the students about their understanding of war and peace. I always felt that what children learn in school was much more meaningful than watching while wreaths were being placed at monuments, usually with little information shared. As an exprincipal - Remembrance Day assemblies were the most important ones (I felt) in our school. The auditorium was usually full with parents and visitors who watched their children as they paid respect to the people who made their country free.

In BC, the public schools are closed on Remembrance day. Not sure about private schools tho..

as far as i can remember, the schools were not closed when i was at school....so they were not closed then and i think it's still the same

for the provincials offices it was monday ( it depens on when the day off should be i.e. on the week or on the we)
for the federals and the banks= this is the day it is i.e. tomorrow
