hey you guys are a bright bunch does anyone here know how to deal with stealing?
my adopted auntie's having problems with her adopted 7 year old she is at her wits end and my mom and I werent much help to her cause we don't have any ideas that she hasnt already tried.
my aunt has cleared out the girls room of all her toys and she is eliminating her backpack so she cant steal stuff at school anymore
does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get her to stop cause nothing seems to be working she doesnt care that her stuff is taken away or anything so its frustrating to try and think up a punishment when the kid doesnt really care...any tips or ideas would be sooo appreciated cause I love my adopted auntie and hate that she is having to go through this stuff after going through all the trouble and taking these kids to give them a better life it so breaks my heart to see her this down wish I lived closer so I could be there more for her

Kasey my son was like 3-4 years old he STOLE a candy bar. I found it when I got back home, I turned the car around (neighbor with me) drove back to the store asked to speak with the manager. He came over I told the manager my son took this without paying for it I think you need to call the cops and have him arrested for stealing. The manager went along with it. We explained how stealing was wrong and kids and adults CAN and DO to to jail for stealing. Kasey gave the manager the candy bar back. The manager told him he would let him slide this time BUT IF EVER he stole anything again he would call the cops and he would go to jail. Kasey has never ever touched anything again!

Your welcome hope it helps. Or have your auntie call the cops and talk to the girl, maybe even PUTTING the cuffs on her and in the back of a squad car.
I was in law enforcement for a while.

Rose how long has the girl been with your auntie? Could be her bio parents put her up to it. If the girl knows she is adopted it could be acting out because she has issues. I think she should seek some kind of counseling.

I agree with harley tho, take it back to where she stole it from and make her apologize. Did that to my sons. And here is what I tell my boys, The law only says I have to feed you, clothe you, and make sure medical assistance is provided, EVERY THING ELSE is a priveledge. I take away friend time, tv, radio, going anywhere besides school and church, and fone. The have learned that I mean what I say. They do still try me occassionally but usually its not on big issues.

I did the same thing-calling the police. However, she stopped still she was vicitmized and now she can be quite the clepto....So it depends on the situation/casue. I dont' think lack of aprenting make a thief...However if the issue alone is jsut to teach that's the best idea in my book.

I think calling the police would work, I think it would work hopefully, my parents tried that with my sister though, My sister started when she was 8 years old. she is still a major klepto and has been to jail for her stealing. Nothing ever helped, she is not allowed in my house as she always leaves with something she shouldnt.

Hopefully that works for your auntie Rose!!

My mom has had foster children since I was a teenager... stealing is a major issue with the kids whose parents had no involvement with them, typically. (of the kids she had in her home)
She tries the gentle approach first (talking about it, explaining how it hurts people, why it is wrong etc) and if that doesn't work, she takes the kids to the police station and has a cop talk to them about it. THAT typically works, but scaring them too much can cause a problem in itself.
My mom always said she has the hardest time with this issue in particular, she'd rather deal with any issue than this one almost.
I'm sorry your aunt is having such a hard time

LOL that sounds like something that may work especially if nothing else does work for her

she has been there about 7 months now, and its really weird cause the first 6 months she was the perfect kid and only had like normal 7 year old issues but other then that she was an amazing kid and she had actually attached to my aunt like glue the first week she was there and up until the last month was like glue, its just been the last month or so that she has started acting out really badly and the stealing is a new thing too its pretty recent say last few weeks or so but its so major cause of the amount of stuff she is taking from kids at school and then lying about it...
I do think she does need some sort of counselling though cause of the life she had before with her real parents, but idk if that explains why she does it since you would think she would be great since she has it good where she is now LOL

thanks will see if my aunt could arrange that it may get through more if its someone else telling her that its wrong, and I think thats what my aunt said too she would rather deal with anything but this, also because she is so religious it affects her more since she can't figure out a way to deal with it and she doesn't want that in her home...

here is the link to her post on her site if you want to read the whole thing she has up, hoping she comes online later tonight when I am around so I can let her know what you guys have suggested
    btw you guys rock
