i am really surprised that 1 study alone (and no other studies have questioned this study or tried to prove or disprove it) caused soo much attention (a whole anti vacc movement)

like other posters i'm not against accinating children but i don't like the age guidelines.. soo much soo young.. i will be getting my daughter accinated(she's had her up to 1yr done) i just wanted to wait till she was older and easier for her to handle

do i think MMR causes autism.. no... because at the approx age they suggest your child to get the shot is the age where children start hitting milestones which if they don't start hitting could be signs of autism... another part that i wonder about is if a child is borderline could the shot(could be any shot, anything foregin entering the body) that pushes the childs immune system over that line
When life hands you Edward Cullen...throw him back and demand Eric Northman....

My kids are all adults and we just got whatever shots the doctors said they needed. Thank goodness all my kids are fine but I think questioning your doctor about anything that may harm your child is a good thing. Just educate yourself as well as you can than make your decision based on all the facts.
Do they have to be immunized to go to school now? They did when mine were little.

You don't have to get them done, but you do have to sign paper that you agree to remove them from school and have them homeschool if there is a outbreak.

Lots of studies have been done. None have come to the same results.

    Some food for thought:
    "
The reality is that vaccines, and childhood vaccines in particular, are one of the greatest medical advances in the history of humanity.
The virtual elimination of once-common conditions such as measles, mumps and diphtheria through childhood immunization programs has prevented thousands of deaths and untold suffering.
But vaccination programs have been a victim of their own success. Polio and smallpox are all but eradicated, and so uncommon now are diseases such as measles that the public has lost sight of the devastation they wrought.
The reality, too, is that all drugs have side effects and vaccines are no exception. Childhood vaccines - and Canadian kids now routinely get shots to protect them from 14 illnesses - require bothersome needle sticks and they can cause fever and irritation. In rare instances, vaccines can cause shock, brain inflammation and death, particularly in children with allergies or compromised immune systems.
But the risk needs to be kept in perspective: Of the 400,000 children born in Canada each year - virtually all of those are vaccinated - about five will have severe reactions.
That makes vaccines many times safer than over-the-counter medications such as Aspirin and Tylenol.
And the ultimate tragic irony in all this is that the MMR vaccine is probably the safest of all.
Since the 1970s, more than half a billion doses of MMR have been administered around the world, and international research has concluded that there have been no deaths and no permanent damage caused by the vaccine."

Here's another angle to the argument....has there actually been a REAL increase of autism over the years?

Yes, without a doubt the incidence of autism DIAGNOSIS has increased over the years...there is no argument there. However is the increase in autism diagnosis due to the an actual increase in autism or is the increase due to the awareness we now have about autism and the other disorders that fall under its umbrella.

Years ago children with autism were called "special", "weird", or "ed" and they were institutionalized. No one knew what autism was. We now have a name for it, we know more about it, and we look for signs and symptoms. So yes the incidence of diagnosis has increased but has the actual rate of autism increased...the epidemiologist are still trying to figure this out. However, the definition of autism is continually changing and broadening along with changing diagnostic criteria so it is difficult to study the true incidence rate.

this is something i do agree with... kids 50 year ago used to be called energetic or spirited are now classified as things like ADD or ADHD.. we are so quick to jump on some sort of diagnosis

Insane - most excellent points. When I began university in 1978, one of the first new friends I made was a woman with polio - something which I daresay few people have encountered over the past two decades... And to just know that some children have died of measles over the recent years - measles, for gosh' sake!

Psychojo - I totally agree with you - and it's coincidental that the onset revelation of the autism spectrum is approximately at the timeline the MMR is given...

Hell, 30 years ago it was the same way. Some people have to have a diagnosis rather than deal with the issues. Ten years ago, a teacher tried to say one of my boys was "hyperactive and needed Ritalin". My GP called the school and had words. He was a normal nine year old boy that need more than two gym classes a week. It's like some people want medicated, controllable zombies in their classrooms.

Back in our day, we were expected to play outside at lunch and recess and had gym period every day. No computers or hand held electronic games. We weren't over scheduled, we played one sport a season, were told to get off the couch and get outside. The world was still a dangerous place back then but we weren't kept in bubbles.

Aha found it! I knew it was somewhere.
It's a list of 25 studies that could not replicate the results. Some of the studies had 10s of thousands of participants.

I think everyone knows my opinion on vaccines.I'm strongly against. But don't want to start a fight on here (so doubt i'll go back to this thread). For those thinking we are "searching" for reasons to be against it,it's not the case. There have been autism problems due to vaccines based on some of the ingredients, yes.Even some doctors who are all for vax brought that up time& time again when my little one went for check-ups.I regret to say her dad didn't agree with my decision on not to vaccinate, nor did my family,& due to a lot of harassment against me on MY beliefs,I had to give in& hate myself everyday for it.Luckily my family,& my community decided that if I give her just her baby shots they'd leave me alone. She'll get vaccines up to age 5,then no more unless she chooses it for herself. It's a touchy subject,& different people have different views on it.None of the ingredients in any vaccine out there is "safe" for consumption/injection. Doctors don't deny that, but they're throw "the risks are greater" backlash at those who don't share their opinion.

I really suffered a lot due to my beliefs to the point people left phone calls to my parents& I've had serious threats made due to my "stupidity".

    Food for thought
    http://articles.mercola.com/sites/ar...interview.aspx

Don't worry Melissa I am with you kinda, I selectively vax and would never say either way if MMR causes autism or not but the parents that I have met swear it did and I am always a firm believer in that parents know their kids better.
    Keep it carbed......
