I'd love to see either Elvis Stojko, Kurt Browning or Brian Orser light the cauldron. I love figure skating and those guys are my favorites.

Why did Arnold get to carry the torch?

"To this day, one of the strangest things in the history of the world is Arnold Schwarzenegger's career path. From steroid-using bodybuilder to the world's biggest action star to governor of California, which is still one of the most unbelievable things ever. To that list of bizarre triumphs Schwarzenegger can add Olympic torch carrier.

As California's "green governor," Schwarzenegger has forged a relationship with British Columbia's "green premier" Gordon Campbell and Vancouver's "green mayor" Gregor Robertson, leading to his selection as torch carrier. Despite zero Canadian heritage, Schwarzenegger will join Canadian heroes such as Steve Nash (two time NBA MVP), Walter Gretzky (father of Wayne Gretzky), and Michael Bublé (singer my mom really likes).

Even more perplexing is that Schwarzenegger will carry the torch on Friday morning, a scant twelve hours before the Opening Ceremony begins, meaning that an Austro-American politician will be a major figure during one of Canada's finest moments. If in a few years Arnold Schwarzenegger is somehow the Prime Minister of Canada, I will not be surprised. "

Still surprised to see his name in the mix..

as long as it isn't a politician, or someone "famous" (hollywood famous) no actors or actresses or singers should light it.. the person who lights it should represent the spirit of the olympic games as well as the spirit of canada

Thanks for the info, Baggy. I'm laughing my head off after reading that last line about Arnold maybe being the PM some day. I personally don't think he should be involved at all.

Someone had before suggested Rick Hansen, who would have been a fine choice. He lit the cauldron already in Richmond.

Gretzky was in Saskatoon a few days ago, and he was asked about this - and would not answer.

Yet to carry - astronaut Julie Payette, singer Jann Arden, hockey player Richard Brodeur, singer Richard Buble, track star Sebastian Coe (chair of London's 2010 Olympics), Wayne Gretzky's dad Walter, Terry Fox's dad Rolly.
Three popular former Vancouver athletes will hold the torch later on Friday. Former Canuck Stan Smyl, Bob Lenarduzzi of the Vancouver Whitecaps, and Lui Passaglia of the B.C. Lions will all be running in Vancouver over the noon hour.

Can't wait to get downtown and take part in the fun! Did go to the torch relay in Abby. DD was able to touch the torch and get autographs from Russian Figure Skaters! We need to make it over to the Rec center to watch them practice, but this is a really busy time for us too!

Just got DD's rehersal schedule for the Paralympic Opening Ceremonies....if anyone can tell me a good way to get a bunch of girls (age 10-12) in and out of Vancouver from the Fraser Valley (sometimes as late as 10pm)....boy would I love to hear from you!!!! Seriously, anyone out there with a secret parking spot near BC Place or even just near a skytrain station?

I'd say take the West Coast Express from Mission... then hop on a bus that will take you close to the stadium. Yet you are still going to have to walk since all the security with the games.

I don't think you can park downtown or even getting into downtown with all the road closures. Unless you have a special parking pass. It be really expensive if you could find a spot to park that car.

I just saw a list of the free concerts that are happening during the Olympics. I really wish I lived in the area.
