The advantage is that you get DOUBLE points that way. You get points on the purchase of the SDM gift card and then you get points again when you use it for your purchase at SDM. Another advantage is that both of these points calculations are included as BASE points which go towards plus member status.

PLUS ~ when you use your gift card to pay for your purchase it's like getting points on taxes as well.

Say you are going to spend $10 before taxes so total with taxes is going to be $11.

You buy an $11 gift card and get 110 BP
You spend $10 plus $1 tax and pay with the gift card for 100 BP (total before taxes)

So you got 210 points for a $10 transaction before taxes so it's like getting bp on the taxes!

No you don't get the bonus points on a GC purchase, just the base points.

Yes. Bus passes/tickets, lottery, stamps. Buy SDM GC first and then use it to buy these items.

Does anyone know how many separate transactions we can do for the bonus points on the same card? Is it only 2?

I've already done 2 transactions and got the bonus points both times, and now I am considering doing it once more...
