Hey is that for sale? Why no it's not! Rant/Vent

I don’t know how many people have experienced this so I’m just kind of curious if it’s an out of the ordinary thing to happen.<o:p>

Earlier tonight I was at the grocery store and this guy asked me if I’m selling my car cause his friend wanted to buy one like it. I said I wasn’t really thinking about selling it and gave him a weird look and got in my car and drove off. The question is why do random people think its okay to assume you’re selling something? This wasn’t a onetime occurrence and no it’s not just happening to me, my father has used my car a few times and had people ask too! I can count at least 5times in the past 3 years. It’s happened one too many times in my mind that it’s starting to annoy me.(hence why I made a thread about it on the internet! I need to vent lol) The important thing to note is I do not have a FOR SALE sign on the car or anything that suggest it’s for sale. It’s getting annoying and I almost want to be like look in the auto trader or classified section if you want to buy something! Also even if I were to sell my car I wouldn’t want to sell to some random person who just happened to invite me to sell it to them (probably because I know they would offer a ridiculously low amount). This sort of behaviour sort of reminds me of that kid who used to invite himself over to play at your house.

This actually goes further than my car. About five years ago my father had some family drama at his house and it was even in the papers the next day (was pretty bad). Then the next month this guy kept driving by our house (we would either be leaving or just coming in and seeing him drive off was very creepy we thought he was casing the place). Neighbours said he had been knocking on our door while we were not home. So one day when we were home and he came by we answered the door. To find out why he kept coming by, turns out he had the nerve to ask if we plan on selling the house. Keep in mind me dad was still shaken up(me too) from the drama that happened not too long ago. I was VERY pissed off at this tacky I assume real estate agents behaviour I felt like chasing him off the property. But yeah my father answered the door so that never happened. Told him he wasn’t thinking of selling anytime soon and that was the last we saw of him (thank god). Again there was no for sale sign or ad in the paper.<o:p>

This is just a pet peeve of mine and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. I’m very protective of my belongings! So to have random strangers try and suggest I sell it ticks me off. If I wanted to sell something I would advertise it. I just find it really tacky to have someone assume you’re going to sell something you are clearly not interested in selling.<o:p>

Am I alone on this or has anyone else had something similar happen to them?

Hmmn, my husband has a sports carish thing he drives in the summer and people ask him all the time if hed sell it.

But a regular car thats weird.

As for the house thats just really strange lol!

One of the people who asked was a woman who grew up in the neighbourhood, loved the neighbourhood, our house and our yard! I didn't mind - I was kind of flattered.

So far no one has offered to buy my toyota echo, but if gas prices go up even more maybe that will change, lol

most people are usually just interested in buying things even if they are a not for sale...but when things are for sale they couldn't care less some times.

For years we have been having people come to house asking if they could make an offer on the house...and for years we been telling them its not for sale. Its a nice house we have a view of the mountains when there isn't clouds, its quiet hardly any noise, wildlife always comes through, sits on acreage, and still has trees. Down side is Septic Tank, close to a Woman's and Men's Prisons, power goes out could be in the dark longer then in town, in a agricultural land reserve, far away from shops, bus services, and hospital.

But anyway people just seem generally interested in others and some times people know that other people don't broadcast such things as on the market to sell as 'Jobs, Houses, etc...' And sometimes people who own such items may know others who might be selling certain items...like attracts like...

I've had people ask me if I was planning on selling my house before. I don't think it's that unusual, especially in a hot real estate market and a good neighbourhood. One of the people who asked was a woman who grew up in the neighbourhood, loved the neighbourhood, our house and our yard! I didn't mind - I was kind of flattered.

We've had this happen several times over the past few years - because of the reasons mentioned above by Goddess.
And actually, one of my sisters ended up buying a house about five years ago that way. There was a house in a nearby neighbourhood she always admired - I guess from some public angle you could see the garden and a back sunroom they had added on. So one day my sis said she just got her nerve up, went to the house and talked with the woman - turned out they had had it on the market previously, and were still interested in selling but didn't have it listed - and my sister and her husband bought the house, and it's amazing.

I live in a hip, happening neighbourhood. Whenever I'm out walking the dog & especially when I'm out front of the building with the cat, I get stopped & asked whether I am interested in selling my condo.

The first few times it was flattering. Now I just tell them that while I might consider selling, my roommates would not. None have even put 2 & 2 together & realized I was talking about the critters.

Years ago, I had a little red VW Jetta. For some reason, everyone & their brother would come up to me in parking lots & comment on that car. I did love that little car. I still miss the trunkspace.

I think the car thing is weird unless your car stands out in a parking lot then not so weird. My ex used to walk up to strangers and ask them about their cars and he got a few deals that way. The guy at the house was just rude, he should have known due to the publicity to leave you guys alone. I have had people knock on my door asking if we are thinking of selling so I guess I'm used to that weirdness.

BTW, when our housing market was really hot (well, it still is), we also had realtors coming by all the time... got a bit irritating! JUST in case... they all said.
This was about a year and a half ago when houses near our area would have a sign up for like two hours - and there were bidding wars with people buying houses over the asking price.

Ok, I need to know what type of car you drive too.
I got asked in the Sobeys parking lot if I like my SUV cause the people were thinking of buying one. They asked a bunch of questions thanked me and I left. Asking if your selling your car is not weird...I don't know many people who have driven the same car for more than 4 years so assuming your car in not brand new, yes there could be a chance that you are looking for something new.

The house was very different as there was a story in the news paper and I think the guy was thinking we were going to sell fast as the way it was written probably looked like someone died.... so yea I wanted to run the guy off the property with a blunt sharp object. If they simply admired the house its totally differen't. Its not the same situation.

No no not at all its actually old but they stopped making them but still u can easily buy one in the auto trader. I think ppl ask becuz they think they'll get a deal this way. My car is appealing to young guys who want their first car.

Thats totally different ! You guys have very beautiful houses this guy simply seen it as a deal as probably thought someone woul dbe selling the house due to a death! (which never happenbed) but the way the atrical was written it could of been read this way.

Yeah ur car is appealing to younger guys as is mine I know the feeling. Also I love my trunk space Ive taken home some huge things in that trunk.

Nah nah my car has seen better days read a few posts above for more detail.

Thank you for seeing the guy at the house being rude ! Everyone else seems to think he was there simply because of the house it was more so the situation.

Thats helpful when you are trying to sell to have a house in a hot area. I hope when it comes to the time my father wants to sell he gets a bidding war. This area is sought after but other houses get sold here too so its not so pick dry here.

The hubby just got asked this 2 weeks ago about our truck, it's an older model and in great shape, and the garage guy asked about buying it. So we figure if he's interested in it, it must still be in good shape.
I have had folks ask me about my house many times. I had bought it before the hubby and I got together, and then we bought my grandma's house, so we have two. And folks are like, well you don't need two houses, why won't you sell. I keep telling them, if the price is right, it's there's. I plan on keeping that one for my retirement fund, or if the girls need more money for there educations.
