I live 5 min. from the border - I'm thinking seriously about going over every Sunday, getting gas & buying 1-2 papers for inserts (and looking around to see if I can get 'recycled' ones for free
) and then going down at least once a month to get 'freebies' - ie. it's on sale for $2 and I have a coupon for $2, etc.

I find the discussion about donating interesting. I do donate some of the stuff I get for free and I love being able to do so. Keep in mind, though, that manufacturers always recover their costs from the consumer. So, everyone else out there who doesn't use 1,500 coupons to get free cereal is picking up the cost. I will be very surprised if manufacturers don't start imposing limits (like P&G has). I love couponing, I love donating, but I think moderation and common sense are appropriate.

For manufacturers, coupons are their cheapest source of advertising and easiest way to generate new customers & maintain existing customers & brand loyalty.............it's also a mechanism to monitor consumer interest in their products, ie. they can look at the coupon usage stats. to see if sales spiked up after coupons are issued, etc.
(You may notice that store flyers will now mention 'P&G brandsaver coupons' in their flyers that coincide with P&G's quarterly coupon insert - just check this week's store flyers. )
Manufactureres pay millions & millions for television, movie product placement, celebrity endorsement, newspaper, magazine and radio ads, not to mention contests giving away cars, cash, vacations, all to entice you to buy their product...................coupons? ..............the cost of printing is mere pennies compared to all other forms of advertising............ie. corporations do bidding wars to pay millions of dollars for a 30-second commercial during Super Bowl!
As well, stores make bulk orders of thousands of units at wholesale costs.....the manufacturer's profit margin is factored into it's wholesale sales, not retail prices..................the consumer pays retail price at a variety of pricepoints, depending how price 'savvy' they are, and this, conversely, affects the retailers (not manufacturer's) profit margin.
For the record, here's 2 examples: both P&G and Kellogg's reported profits in the billions (that's billions, not millions
) of dollars last year.

All true, Barb, but the wholesale price and retail prices are directly related. The higher the wholesale price, the higher the retail price for consumers. And while companies do spent huge amounts on advertising, today's economy has changed the way many corporations do business. They aren't leaving money on the table unless they have to. I'm not saying that couponing is going to come to an end, just that I expect/on't be surprised to see more companies put reasonable limits on coupon use. In the final analysis, coupons are issued so that we as consumers can try new products and so that companies can garner brand loyalty. It'll be interesting to see what happens. On the one hand, couponing has been going on in the U.S. for years and years, however the internet has made it a whole new ball game. All that said, I'm certainly not an authority on couponing so it's only my opinion.....

I live 20 min from the border in BC too, do you know which stores double or stack coupons. I have learned that Target has coupons on their website you can stack with mfg coupons. CVS and Walgreens also have special coupon rewards. I have called Safeway, Hagens, Cost Cutter and Fred Meyer non stack. Any ideas?
