The Falcon 9 rocket carried an advanced Spanish imaging satellite named Paz that can take extremely clear pictures of the Earth for commercial, government and scientific customers.
Hawthorne-based SpaceX worked to successfully recover the fairing – or nose cone – for the first time on this trip, and the equipment was deployed without problem from the rocket after launch.
But it didn’t land, as hoped, on the company’s specially designed ship named Mr. Steven, engineered to catch the 4-story-tall rocket fairing with a net stretched over four giant claw-like arms.




Spacex has leased the Mr Steven boat and has it docked with it’s other support vehicles in the Port of Los Angeles.

The Mr Steven has been outfitted with large arms to transport the fairing cover after it is recovered after a launch.

“Made it back from space and fairing parafoil just deployed,” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted shortly after liftoff. “Now trying to catch it …
An hour after launch, Musk posted this update: “Missed by a few hundred meters, but fairing landed intact in water.
Should be able catch it with slightly bigger chutes to slow down descent.”
The 205-foot-long Mr. Steven, usually docked in San Pedro’s outer harbor at the Port of Los Angeles, was deployed off Baja California for the fairing’s recovery. Musk described the ship as “a giant catcher’s mitt in boat form.

TGIF Q sters,
The weekend is about to begin.
A very foggy start to the day out here, but it will warm up over the weekend.
We won a Gold, Silver & Bronze yesterday, 2 in Ski Cross & Bronze in Ladies Figure Skating.
Unlike our mixed curlers, the men & women curlers were shut out of the medals. 1st time since the spot began.
Our men's team meet Germany this morning to go on to the finals. Go Canada Go!

Update expected on investigation into accused serial killer Bruce McArthur

Toronto police are expected to provide an update on Friday about their investigation into accused serial killer Bruce McArthur. Police say the announcement will be made during a morning news conference and investigators are expected to provide new details on McArthur, who already faces first-degree murder charges in the cases of five men. Toronto police have been combing properties where the 66-year-old landscaper worked since his arrest back on January 18th -- they expect to lay more charges.
