Risk of freezing rain for southern Ontario Thursday, threat of weekend ice storm

It might be a bit of a slick drive for motorists this morning. A special weather statement has been issued for the city as we're expecting a good dose of freezing rain in the city. Global News Chief Meteorologist Anthony Farnell telling us this is just the first wave of what will be a lingering system over the GTA, expected to bring some wintery conditions this weekend. The only silver lining is that we will see the mercury shoot up to 15 degrees this afternoon.

First funeral of Humboldt Broncos bus crash victims set for today

The first of 16 funerals for the victims of the Humboldt, Saskatchewan bus crash will be held today. A funeral will be held for 29-year-old Tyler Bieber at the home arena of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team. Bieber was a radio broadcaster in his first year as a play-by-play announcer for the Broncos. The team lost 16 players, coaches and staff when their bus crashed with a transport truck last Friday.

Maple Leafs begin playoffs tonight against Bruins

The Toronto Maple Leafs begin their first-round of their Stanley Cup playoff series against the Bruins tonight in Boston. A lot of expectations will be on top line centre Auston Matthews, who was quick to share the spotlight and pressure with net minder Freddy Andersen. Need I remind Leafs fans this is the first time these two teams are meeting in the post season since Toronto’s memorable collapse in game 7 of the 2013 Eastern Conference quarterfinals. The Leafs let a 4-1 lead slip in an eventual 5-4 overtime loss that spelled the end of their post-season. Go Leafs Go!

The Maple Leafs aren’t the only reason hockey is top of mind. It is Jersey Day, the latest tribute for victims and families affected by the deadly Humboldt, Saskatchewan bus crash. Residents are being asked to sport a jersey or green and gold. Meanwhile, the GoFundMe page for the victims and their families now sits at $9.2 million -- about 111,000 people have made a donation to that fund.

The simplest way to differentiate between planets and stars is by observing whether the object is twinkling or if it remains bright. Stars twinkle, while planets are brighter and do not shimmer. Planets can have a slight color to them as well, unlike stars, which are white.

You are partially right Rocky. Planets don't twinkle, but stars do. That is just due to the distance the light travels through interstellar space and our atmosphere.

Stars do have colours that we can perceive from Earth. If you look at the constellation Orion, two of the prominent stars are noticeably different in colour. Rigel is bluish and Betegeuse is red. Even though Orion is a winter constellation, you can still see it in the western sky about an hour after sunset.

A few years ago I remember Kim Mitchell explaining the meaning of this song on his afternoon show on Q. As most folks thought, his boy was going to be in the big league. But Kim explained that the story is about a hockey parent who lost his son, and he still goes to hockey rinks as if his son was still playing.
