Hundreds pack Toronto's Greektown for vigil honouring shooting victims

Another sombre vigil was held along the Danforth. A stretch of Greek town was packed with mourners as the community gathered for a candlelit vigil to honour 10-year-old Julianna Kozis and 18-year-old Reese Fallon, who were killed in Sunday's shooting. Hundreds of mourners gathered at the corner of Danforth and Bowden Avenue to start the procession last night, including Mayor John Tory. The gunman, identified by Ontario's police watchdog as Faisal Hussain, was also killed and there are reports now suggesting he did in fact turn the gun on himself following a brief standoff with police.

Tories pass back-to-work legislation ending York U strike

York University students will return to class in the fall. As promised the provincial Tories have passed legislation, ending a nearly five-month-long strike. The back-to-work legislation was part of a bill supported by the Tories and liberals but voted against by the opposition NDP. Three-thousand contract faculty, graduate teaching and research assistants at the Toronto university walked off the job on march 5th over issues of wages and job security.

TFC beats Fury FC, advances to Canadian Championship final

It’ll be Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps playing for the Voyageurs Cup. Toronto and Vancouver earned their way into the Canadian championship final last night. TFC downed the Ottawa Fury 4-nil, while the Whitecaps beat the Montreal Impact 2-1. The two-legged final is set for August 8th and 15th.
