Why not make a new user group for users with less than, say, 10 posts? If they're in that group, moderators have to approve every post they make. You could also prohibit that group's members from being able to create new threads or send PMs. I'm sure if they can make 10 quality posts without a hint of spam, they can graduate to being a full SC member (which could be a good time to resend them the agreement from registration).

I don't know why certain urls aren't automatically blocked when spammers try to post them (or created a shortcut link to the urls). One example is that damn laundry detergent site that gets spammed over and over and over again....

We've tried moderating new members and all it does is really discourage new legit visitors to ever post or visit again.

Manzervite, we do have a huge blocked site list thats ever growing. Quite often these spammers are posting different sites and variations all the time. I don't think Ive seen the laundry detergent one. Can you send me a link and I'll block it?

Its not like we just sit here and aren't working on things to stop this. The biggest thing is Boo doesn't want to discourage new members. We even tried 10 posts before you can even post a link and got a large amount of complaints from legit new members.

That's nearly 100 new members in little over 12 hours. if each of those becomes an active member and if all new members have a moderated post limit of 10 before being allowed to post freely, then the poor mods will be reading and manually accepting ITRO 1,000 posts as well as all their other duties.

That's like reading a 60+ page thread every day.

from my earlier posts made over a random 12 hr daytime period...the sheer numbers of new members and the assiocated x number of modded posts makes for a full time job.

I managed to make 100 modded posts on Treehouse in a day...allowing me full access to post WTF I liked within reason.
A dedicated spammer could easily get round a 10 post rule.
