I don't agree about the vacuum cleaners. Yes, you can buy a new one for $100, but it doesn't mean it works as well as a used Miele or Electrolux. I bought a used Electrolux in the early 80s that still works to this day.

We bought a used built in vacuum at an auction for $10. Our house had one roughed in, but there was no vacuum itself. We took it to a vacuum repair shop, and he did an inspection, cleaning, freshening and tune for a grand total of $35. We also bought the hose at a garage sale - some couple got two hoses with their setup, and they decided that they would rather have $5 than a spare brand new hose.

It served us very well for years, and was still in the house when we sold.

I would say maybe avoid furniture too if you are in larger cities...I know that some places have major bed bug problems so that has kept me from buying any second hand furniture for my place here in Toronto. Where I used to live I bought a second hand old antique dresser for $30 and it's amazing and very heavy. Solid wood and beautiful! I would never chance it here though...Just too many reports and you never know what you could bring home with you. It sucks because I like older stuff better, but to be safe I will be going to either Ikea or Walmart to get a comfy chair.
