    Hey all,

Not so much a rant just kinda bummed about the way our summer has gone.

We lost our car a few months back and decided to tough it out without one for a few years until we both finish school. This hasn't been that bad! What bums me out is missing out on things we would have done with the kids had we not lost our car (zoo pass, mom and tots classes, splash parks, visiting relatives out of town etc). We take them to the park and library every week at least once, and go for a walk every night after dinner, so that's nice.

My parents invited us to their cottage 4-5 hours away next week but dh isn't too keen on going (long drive with the kids - in their car lol, plus it's in the boonies at least 45 mins from any town and we are city dwellers lol, and the history with my parents is pretty much a Miracle we still have any kind of relationship with them at all so it's not the most comfortable stay even though things are very good now).

To top it off, next weekend is out 5th year anniversary but my sister in law and her dh (hands down the two most selfish ppl I've personally met, and DH attests to this too) decided to ask my mother in law to babysit their youngest while they take their two older kids on holiday on the weekend of our anniversary!!! (this may seem like a small thing but my MIL is the only family in town we have who will babysit overnight and she even complains about that at times).

I guess what my post boils down to is me just being sad that after 5 years to celebrate our wedding day (which was a dramatic spectacle all its own lol) we will be doing the same thing we do every day: get up, feed the kids, entertain the kids, clean, feed the kids, take the kids out, feed the kids, bath the kids, put the kids to bed, clean, then lay down exhausted from the days events. I will admit it's hard for me to spend a weekend away from the kids (they are only 18 months and 29 months) but I would have loved even a day outing to spend with DH and by the time there is a sitter available we will be back into our insane schedules at school.

Anyway, thanks for listening to my mundane rant haha. I'm not looking for criticism, just feels good to share my frustrations with someone besides DH who feels the exact same way

Sometimes the simplest things can still be special. Refuse to cook on your anniversary and order in Pizza! (Or buy frozen). With your favourite ice cream for dessert!
Have a dance party with the kids -- shake your booty to all The Wiggles best songs!

Oh honey, take a raincheck on your MIL's babysitting. It may come in real handy in a month or two when you'll really need a break.

    Happy Anniversary!

NO car.... try a car share program. See if your city has one.

Been there and feel your pain but in the blink of an eye you will be saying "Where's the kids? Haven't seen them all week". When they hit their late teens they are out galavanting all the time and you kinda miss the little buggers!!!!

Congrats on your 5 year anniversary.

It sounds like you have had a tough summer. Although it may feel like your kids are missing out, please know that it is the quality time you spend with them, not where you go, that makes a lasting difference in their lives. I hope you find a way to make your anniversary special...even if you just find a teenager to take the kids out for a few hours to give the two of you time to spend together.

I would take your parents offer to go with them next week, your children would probably enjoy time at their cottage. Even the long trip can be an adventure (we go to my grandparent's place on a lake, 5 1/2-6 hours away - the drive up is half the fun).

...as for your anniversary, in 15 years I think we've only celebrated maybe 4 of those years on the actual day, it just never seemed to work out -but that doesn't mean we didn't celebrate later! I wouldn't stress about that just plan a different day this year.

    Happy Anniversary

Aw, sorry you are feeling bummed out - but think of all the great quality and quantity time you've had with your kids! Years later, they are going to remember the cool stuff you did with them at home more than the outings they had.

As for the anniversary, congrats in advance! We just celebrated our 23rd, and have never celebrated with just the two of us - for us, it's a family event! When times were tight, I just cooked an extra-special meal, and we spent the evening together at home!

Please don't be bummed. My husband was on the road for our 10 year anniversary so be happy he will be home with you. Why don't you have a mini recreation wedding dinner date with the kids. Dress them up and even try on your wedding dress. Let them understand it is Mommy and Daddy's special day. Make a cake and feed it each other funny, have a dance party after dinner even if it's the Wiggles playing the music, throw a home made paper flower bouquet ....and you can include the kids in all of it!

Have a happy anniversary none the less!!!

I would offer to help with the kids but we will be gone Saturday night . You have so much to be thankful for tho, and these times are only temporary! I'm sure the kids don't even notice not having the extra outings either. All they will notice is that they get to have you both to themselves and I'm sure they don't care what they're doing as long as its with you!

There will always be more anniversaries to come and the activity you do doesn't make the day special, your family and you guys still being together is what makes it special .

DH and i have only had a babysitter once on our anniversary. I think it was our 3 or 4th. ( and there was a big blizzard that came through so we couldn't go out, we eat left overs ) We wont have a babysitter again this year. My mom wont watch my son and I've never trusted my IL's. So i understand where your coming from. it will be ok. Now that my son is older, we include him in everything. This year i let him plan DH's B-day party. It was dinosaur themed but we all still had a good time. when your kids are older you can include them in more stuff too. Just remember, the best is yet to come
    Happy Anniversary !!

Thanks everyone for your encouraging words. It's nice to have a little community here on SC where we can share

I live in Brantford lol. I think what everyone is suggesting is good. Maybe we will do something nice as a family to celebrate. I never really thought of an anniversary being a family event but it could be fun! And how did some of you know my kids are obsessed with the Wiggles haha!

    Thanks again, friends

    Happy Anniversary!!!

Well, I think everyone has some GREAT ideas... I'm not sure what kind of budget you have... but I would:

go to the dollar store and buy paper plates, plastic forks/spoons/bowls = NO DISHES on your day

order in your lupper(lunch & supper together) = No cooking 2 meals on your day

bake or cake or buy a cake.... have icecream or WHATEVER your favorite treat is.

be silly with your kids and hubby... what about a pj day? what about a craft that you will keep for years to come... that will help you remember how amazing your 5th anniversary was
