A Belgian is seeking to have his marriage annulled after discovering that his Indonesian wife of 19 years had been born a man.
Jan, 64, said that he and his wife had decided not to have children because he had two by his previous marriage and she fooled him by pretending to menstruate, using sanitary towels, "to conceal the truth".This thread is currently associated with: N/A

If her husband of 19 years had no clue, she could have been born intersexed and then chose one later on in life...we can't really tell from the story.
I'm not surprised by the article but what I did find funny..."...Monica, 48... began to wear very flashy clothes, those ultra-short skirts or tiny tops, so her abdomen was completely exposed..." Makes me think of my father's second wife and that was quite a sight, lol.~RRLF $0.75 Organic Meadow, $1 Almond Fresh~

That's why intersexuality came to mind. It's not as uncommon as we think but, it's not something you'll hear people frequently speak of. Years ago, I met a surrogate mother who was carrying a baby for a couple who wasn't able to conceive. When the wife was in her late teen/early adulthood, it was discovered that while she appeared, in every sense, a female, internally, she had the organs of a male. Imagine the shock and confusion for her when she found out
. Unlike the article, it was a happy ending in that case though.

There can be lots of variations of intersexuality. Some people can be born with the genitalia of both sexes as well (which is what I was thinking of in the case of the wife in the article). Often parents and doctors decide to assign one sex to the infant and surgery is done early on in life. A topic for another discussion but, I find it rather sad that they feel a decision has to be made...I think it should be left up to the child themselves when they are older if they even decide to have surgery at all *shrug*.

I just don't see what the big deal is. It's awfully sad to end a marriage because of this. You must not love your spouse as much as you think.
