After 38 years of being involved in the Education of Young People in one form or other, I have decided not to pay my "College of Teachers" dues which means that I will not be a certified teacher as of midnight tonight. It is a very bittersweet day. The "Teaching Community" and culture have been a part of my life since I was in Grade 8 (since my dad became a teacher that year.)

I wish the best to all of you who are involved in teaching the young - whether as parents - teachers- education administrators - board of education trustees - guide/scout leaders- Sunday School Teachers- Day Care Employees and on and on. Your calling is an honourable one.

Oh, thanks, anisa! Everything is good - just feeling a little nostalgic tonight.

I'm sure you've given it a lot of thought. Are you retired now?
We have many teachers in our extended family. It is indeed an honorable profession.
    Best wishes to you.

38 years is quite some time, I think a break is in order. And that should mean you have more time to spend with us. Right?

My dh complains that I spend TOO MUCH time with you guys as it is! LOL!

I retired from being a principal 9 years ago but have been supply teaching since then. Now I have to give away all my "teacher" stuff - 'cause I'll not need it any more! That should free up a few square feet of space! I said I was going to have a bonfire tonight, but the news out of Boston has taken the wind out of my celebration!

Oh, my Friend....I recall when my hubby retired from teaching high school and being the head of two departments...it was difficult, and like you, he supply-taught for a few years after that. Then he tutored for another year. It's not like ripping off a bandaid, is it? Particularly when you enjoy teaching youngsters ... but once you get over it....he admits to a freedom, that's for sure!
Good luck, Hon...I know it hasn't been an easy decision for you...and I wish you many happy years with your hubby, travelling (meeting us in Michigan again?)...and enjoying each other's company. And your two fur-babies....Have a wonderful retirement, Hon!!

Enjoy retirement! How many years did you teach?

My dad retired at 57 after 38 years as a teacher, principal, superintendent. Two years later, he started a brand new 'career' in the ministry.
