There was just a sound clip on tv of Martin Luther King..a portion of his "I have a dream speech", and I wish I could have actually been there to see and hear any one of his speeches.

Which got me thinking who else I might want to have witnessed speaking....
    Julius Caesar, yes...
Jesus, absolutely...(I have a few questions.....)
the Gettysburg Address given by Abraham Lincoln (probably because we just finished watching "The Civil War" in the PBS series)...
just about anything by Douglas McArthur...

    What about you?
Who do you wish you had witnessed speaking...and any speech in particular?

I would have loved to have heard Pope John Paul II speak in person. When he was in Canada for World Youth Day in 2002, I was SO touched by his homilies, based on the theme “You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world”.

I'd love to hear the current Dalai Lama speak as well.

Also on my list from the past - John Diefenbaker, an amazing orator.

Queen Elizabeth I speech to the troops at Tilbury before they faced the Spanish in battle

    JFK's inaugural address

Kings "I have a dream" speech
"Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken." Oscar Widle

In person I would say JFK, it's just not the same on tv.

In the "what were they thinking" category I would like to hear some explanations from these people in no particular order.

    Alexander
    Hiltler
    Julius Ceasar
    Genghis Khan
    Bill CLinton
    Einstein
    Galileio
wow so many I better stop

It's interesting, this thread lead me to google historic speeches, and I spent some time last night reading and listening to quite a few of them - yay for the interweb for having all this content available to us!

Funny you say that because my dad is always on my case about how much time Kevin spends on the web but he is a history buff and is always looking up things on the net. He learns more on the web than in school. lol

It is great, isn't it, Natalka!
What in the world did we do without it?
    Oh. I know.
Housework, talking on the phone with friends instead of emailing them, lol...

Glad you're all enjoying this thread!!

And yes, I should add JFK, too...
And Bill Clinton, actually, too...I read most of his book (his biography) and he's an incredible writer! I actually wanted to highlight parts in it!

I agree, Lynn -- Bill Clinton. I'd like to hear Barack Obama in person as well. I feel sorry for him right now for being blamed for everything by the Republicans. Wish we could invite him to Canada to be the next PM. He seems more like a Canadian than a lot of the other US politicians, and I think he'd like it here.
