Canada may be the most Ukrainian country outside of Ukraine itself. With 1.3 million Canadians claiming Ukrainian descent, we have deep personal and cultural bonds that span generations. Last year marked the 125th anniversary of the first Ukrainian immigration to Canada.


Canada and Ukraine recently strengthened our relations in a very 21st-century way – negotiating a free-trade agreement. Once it takes effect on Aug. 1, the Canada-Ukraine free-trade agreement (CUFTA) will provide immediate duty-free access for 98 per cent of goods traded. Like Canada, Ukraine also has a free-trade agreement with the European Union, giving firms opportunities to trade largely tariff-free across a large economic bloc.

Ivan was born July 5, 1974 in Skotareve, Cherkasy Oblast. He served as a sniper in the Ukrainian Army.

Yuriy Tishchneko passed away in Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro on July 30, 2017. Yuriy was critically wounded during tank exercises at the Chuhuyevsky Training Grounds, Kharkiv Oblast. Eight other soldiers were also injured. For 10 days, doctors and medical teams fought to save his life, but Yuriy’s body refused to live.

Yuriy was born on April 12, 1972 in Krivy Rih, Dnipropetrivsk Oblast. He served in the Tank Division of the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade.

20-year-old Rostyslav Dobroshynsky was killed by a sniper bullet near the village of Novozvanivka, Luhansk Oblast on August 1, 2017.

Rostyslav was born in Kamyanets-Podilsky, Khmelnytsky Oblast. He served in the 8th Separate Motorized Infantry Battalion “Podillya” of the 10th Separate Assault Brigade.
He leaves behind his grieving mother.

Volodymyr was born in Pustomyty, lviv Oblast in 1996. He served as driver in the 46th Separate Special-Purpose Battalion “Donbas-Ukraine”. He was mobilized on October 3, 2014..
Volodymyr leaves behind his parents and younger brother.
