    Thanks Friends ....

Rather than try to reinvent the wheel, please accept these couple email extracts as explaination.

Excerpt of an email sent to a few friends on Frday at about 10 am. ....

Bailey is currently extremely ill. We don't as yet have a final diagnosis. As backgournd, we took Bailey into the vet in July but all her blood-work was good and they attributed her sporadic decline to the oppressive heat. She continued to be OK but although active, she would sometimes not be interested in any of her favourite activities - or simply stop playing in mid game. Blaming it on the heat seemed reasonable at the time.

Yesterday morning she vomited before breakfast and had no interest in food at all. She wasn't interested in laying down either and was definitely more comfortable standing up. This, coupled with the true Garbage Golden that she is, led me to believe she had a stomach and/or digestive issue. When she finally laid down about 2 pm and was able to rest, I was thankful. I wanted to give her time to nap before giving her dinner.

When she didn't get up on her own at dinner time (totally unheard of as Bailey has a better internal clock than most Swiss made timepieces), I immediately phoned the vet. Even though they were totally booked, the vet agreed to see her that evening. Although Bailey was presenting as if she had an obstruction in her intestines, the vet was not convinced this was the case and believed Bailey needed immediate critical care. Our vet phoned the Veterinary Emergency Clinic downtown to brief them and Bailey was seen as soon as we walked through the door.

Last night Bailey underwent abdominal xrays. Based on a couple of suspicious findings, this was immediately followed up by a preliminary ultrasound. I say preliminary because the emerg vet decided that she could not sufficiently read the ultrasound results (also subsequently found out that "preliminary" is a polite way of saying "you don't have to pay for that particular procedure because it has to be repeated"). The emerg vet was able to extract some suspicious fluid to prepare slides for analysis but she wanted to have the board-certified abdominal specialist redo the ultrasound in the morning. (Bailey is with him as I type this). The emerg vet discussed a variety of scenarios that could have led to what she saw. I authorized further (chest) xrays and any non-surgical procedure they thought relevant to tracking down the cause of Bailey's illness. When we left her, Bailey was about to be admitted to ICU, was totally listless and clearly in distress. It was a tough drive home.

Not 5 minutes after coming in the door - shortly before 2 am - the phone rang. It was the emerg vet with results from chest x-rays. It showed Bailey had a heart abnormality. Her heart itself was fine, but there was a significant fluid build-up between her heart and the surrounding heart sac which was causing life-threatening arrhythmia. (Surfing has revealed the medical term is Pericardial Effusion - clearly last evening, the vet was speaking to me in plain English not medicalese ). I authorized the fluid to be tapped. This procedure saved Bailey's life; the vet phoned again shortly after 3 am and said Bailey came through the procedure like a trooper. There were still a few worrisome symptoms and she would remain in doggie ICU until the specialist came in. Unfortunately the cardiac specialist is off today - actually not in town so I can't even ask for an emergency consult - however, the emerg vet has already briefed the abdominal specialist and he has agreed to do an ultrasound of both her belly and her heart. Hopefully he will be better able to identify the suspicious masses uncovered in the emerg vet's ultrasound and review the current condition of her heart as well.

Excerpt of an email this morning to my boss ....

Bailey was released from the Veterinary Emergency Clinic’s ICU and we had her home for the weekend; she will be going to her own vet today to be put down.

After a multitude of tests, it was discovered that Bailey has a small mass on her spleen (operable) and a growth on the wall of her heart (inoperable). This heart mass is what caused the bleed into the heart sac which, in turn, caused the life-threatening arrhythmia. It was also the cause of what presented as digestive issues on Thursday morning – there just wasn’t enough blood pumping through her abdomen and digestive track to allow for proper functioning.

The veterinary internal specialist indicated that with her heart tumour, she can go at anytime. The actual phrase was, “We don’t know how long she has. It could be two hours, two days or two weeks – but no more than two weeks.” We made the decision when we picked her up that we would spend a quiet weekend at home and then take her in on Monday. This also allowed time for (Kidlet) to come home to say her good-byes.

Since having the fluid on her heart tapped, Bailey has been on medication to help with the arrhythmia. We have been told by the vet that her condition is not painful – but clearly the dog was in severe distress on Thursday and I don’t want her to have her to go through that again. This is one of the most painful decisions I have ever had to make, but as painful as it is for me, I know it is absolutely the right thing for my wonderful and loving four-legged friend and companion.
Courage is not the absence of fear but acting in spite of it.
