My husband and I (before we were married) started dating in University. I went home for the summers to my parents house, and it meant for three years that we did the 4-5 month long distance stretches.
At the time I was working a full time 8-5, and a part time job 5:30-10pm, he worked in a kitchen 3-12pm, so we didn't really talk that much, about once a week. The computer with internet was in my sisters' bedroom, so msn was out of the question. We did email once in a while. It was tough. Especially the once where it was 5 months until we saw each other. There were also some stretches where we might have talked once in about two or three weeks due to conflicting work schedules. We survives, and have now been together 10 years in about a month, married for 3 years.
My only advice is to try to talk more frequently than once a week. If we had to have been apart longer than 5 months, we probably wouldn't still be together today.Try out the maven box by julep And code FREEFB, and get your box for one cent:

My man and I did it for 6 months while he went away for school, we rarely talked on the phone and tried to talk nightly via the internet (Steam...chat channel) but the town he was living in had really crappy internet (it was a private company that had a monopoly so they were the ONLY choice). Beacause he was gone September-February the roads were often terrible so I couldn't always drive to see him (only one vehicle and I had it) so we relied on Greyhound. Texting wasn't an option for us. You make do with what you have. But I do think that this friend of yours is going wayyyyy overboard, you need to be able to have a life outside of a relationship (IMO). An hour or two a night should really be enough.

I was long distance with my fiancee (soon to be wife in 2 weeks) for a year. We had met several times during this. I then got a 1 yr working holiday visa to see how it would work. After this I got my permanent residency and have been in Canada for 3 yrs.
We spent HOURS on the phone when we could. It wasn't always easy as I worked full time and she worked 2 jobs but when we had time we would just talk and talk (May help that we are both women though lol)
If she sponsors him to come to Canada then she will be responsible for him for 3 years. If he choses to go on welfare the government will ask her to pay this back. Of course when you are in love it seems like it won't be a problem. Should he leave her and go on welfare she'll get a nasty shock. Also responsible for debt, credit cards etc

Believe me she has been warned. Her kids have been removed from the household because she is infatuated with this man. She has converted to his religion and rearranges her day so that she is up in the middle of night to spend time online with him. I rarely go on facebook and so when I do it is different times of the day or evening and she is there with him chatting whenever I am on too.

I once had a long distance relationship... phone calls happened everyday until batteries died (in the phones) When we met it was online and he was over 3000 kms away... but he relocated to me and that was that... it was a great relationship (he passed away 4 years ago) i can only tell you with open communication it can really work.
