I got an earful from the family for picking up a Glade Sense & Spray (even though it was free). Today's my day off and while I'm washing the floors (day off? humph
) and, I'm thinking about ways to make our home smell nice without the use of chemicals.
I grow Lavender so sometimes make a tea with it and add it to rinse water after washing floors.
Also, to rinse water, I sometimes add rubbing alcohol and vinegar but, dh can't stand the smell (although it does disappear quickly).
Has anyone ever tried adding lemon juice to rinse water?
Another product we use is an electric oil diffuser (we add several drops of 100% essential oils) but, I'm often guilty of forgetting to turn it off once the oil evaporates.
What else do you all use in terms of natural products to make your homes smell nice? This thread is currently associated with: N/A~RRLF $0.75 Organic Meadow, $1 Almond Fresh~

Fresh flowers. They dont make the whole house smell fresher, but the entrance/family room area smells beautiful when we have fresh flowers on the tables.
The only thing I could think of that would make the whole house smell nice is when we bake bread. I love the smell of fresh baking bread and love the way the scent goes through the whole house (love walking into a house and being greeted by the warm, wonderful smell of freshly baked bread). The average dog
is nicer
than the average person.

Fresh flowers....that's a good suggestion
. I'm going to look up different kinds that are the most fragrant and easy-cut to grow in my garden next Summer (florists here are wayyy too expensive to purchase flowers regularly and dh isn't romantic enough either, lol).
The smell of bread baking...yummm! Wonder if there's an essential oil with this fragrance
?

This reminded me of a joke:
Those amazing smells.....
A while ago a new supermarket opened nearby.
It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh.
Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain.
When you pass the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and there is the scent of freshly mowed hay.
In the meat department there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks with onions.
When you approach the egg case, you hear hens clucking and cackling, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.
The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked bread and cookies.
I don't buy toilet paper there anymore.

Our house is a scent-free zone! But... I'm guilty of putting vanilla scented things (soaps, candles) in draws to keep things smelling nice.

Oh, and I am super guilty of baking cookies and stuff to make my house smell nice--but trying to cover the scent of a filthy hoarder is impossible... but yay cookies!

I don't like fake smellies either.
Best smell is from mid-afternoon til bedtime, the smells from supper cooking!
Bread baking IS the best smell ever!
Also, the smell of coffee is nice.
There are candles/smellies which smell like cinnamon buns, or other baking.

I bake, I also cook sugar, vanilla and spices on the stove in a frying pan when I want the house to smell good and don't have time to bake.
I've used lavendar and other flowers in my house. I love potpourri as well, I have 2 burners, and make up my own potpourri...usually cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves and allspice because I love spicy smells when I can't bake.
Boiling teas works as well, and using essential oils or flavorings work too.

I have no idea what I'm going to do in the winter, but in the summer I have Stargazer Lilies growing, and I pick off the blooms and they make the house smell all cinnamonny for quite a while! I imagine if I get the winter blues I'll head to the flower shop to buy a stem and dream of summer again.
I also don't care for commercial scents and with asthma, I can't leave a candle lit for very long at all...I guess my house just smells like my house!
I was thinking about this a while ago...when we were kids, all our houses smelled different!! We knew which house we were in by the lingering scents of baking, spices used...I think kids nowadays miss that...Today everyone's house smells of fake apples or vanilla...or worst of all..fake lavender. They just can't get that smell right...
I brought home some oils from Egypt and once in a while I put a few drops on water in a thingy I have that melts tarts...but again, it's a candle, so I can't have it lit for very long...

If you have company coming and you want to make the house smell reall good, and if it's the time of year that you have your furnace running, just put a couple of drops of pure vanilla down the heat register in the room you want to smell good. As the hot air come out of the vent, it picks up the smell of the vanilla and sends it into the room. I also love the smell of fresh flowers and have them frequently around the house.
We all need a little sunshine every now and then
