Convinced a friend of mine to buy the MXQ Pro android box on the weekend, and I even helped him set it up. This morning he called his cable provider and cut the cord

I wrote about Kodi earlier. I have been able to get an even cheaper solution. I bought myself a Raspberry Pi 3 (on a separate topic, if you have kids who are genuinely interested in learning about computers, this Ph.D. person right here cannot recommend this computer enough). I loaded it with OpenElec, and voila, I have a $50 home theatre system that I built myself.
Very, very cool.

so i was at the cogeco store at limeridge mall, went to update my internet package. the girl told me they were having a promotion for 2 months FREE movie channels including HBO canada. all i have to do is remember to cancel 1 or 2 days before the 2 months is over. ;-)
not sure how long this offer is good for.

Have a look at your account online... I dont know about Cogeco but with Bell you can setup any channel change order (including channel deletions) in advance to occur on a set date. (ie: the day of/before your free trial ends). I do this everytime I sign up for the free/discounted periods so I don't forget.

That's better for you to get rid of cable if you do not watch TV often. Internet is enough for me and may be for you.lol

I just like turning on the TV and everything just works with Cable, I find with the streaming tv services they sometimes are annoying and slow just to start watching something.

I'm in a similar situation. Love modern cable services with multiple TV's and a common PVR.
BTW.... Telus just launched a new product for cord-cutters. It's a streaming media box. Not the same quality as their main Optik product, but useable.

Can someone recommend an android box between the $50-$65.00 range that has kodi(or compatable) and a remote?

We use Roku with Plex app installed. Download new movies from torrent on to laptop and Plex goes and grabs the movies from laptop and streams it on TV. So.. we have all movies.
As for TV Series. You can do the same.
We do not have any live TV channels but shows are usually available on torrent sites within 2 hours from the time they aired

Torrents and OTA (antenna) are they was to go. From there you can get a NAS (hard drive) network box and then use those kodi device to stream t.v.
The actually android kodi streams are flaky at best.
Anything is better than giving Rahjers and Bhell your money.
