Thank you for this tip. My family and I always go to a pick-your-own orchard every year. I always end up with some apples going bad and wasn't how to prevent it.

I might try this too, although I'm a bit wary of an outdoor location like the shed. There's potential for some critters to get in and eat my apples!

This makes sense...ethylene gas hastens ripening and the apples won't be able to "intermingle" if they are individually wrapped. I wouldn't be able to store it in my garage though, they would be frozen solid before long.

But on the other hand, if you put bananas into a paper bag, the same gas speeds up ripening. Wouldn't wrapping them in newspaper have the same effect of trapping the ethylene around the apple?

Hmmm, good question Zonny. I wonder if the concentration of gas has any bearing on the ripening process? I actually store my apples in the fridge if I have the room, they last a long time that way.

    great idea.

I was told my a farmer to put them in a cooler in a single layer and then cover that layer in newspaper and then put more on top. Close the cooler and cover with a blanket and leave them on the balcony / garage wherever is cool. I thought that was a pretty great idea. Apparently works well for potatoes too.

There are some varieties that I find don't turn brown after cutting - but I don't know which ones! They're apples I picked last year, hope I can find them again this year.

I have been putting apples slices in my DS's lunch, and sprinkle those with a dash of lemon juice. He notices that less than brown apples.

Some of our fall apples did go bad before we could use them all. I didn't have a cold (not frozen) place to store them. My basement used to be cool, but now my mom lives there and she needs it warmer.
