The poppy is the recognized symbol of remembrance for war dead in Canada, the countries of the British Commonwealth, and the United States. The flower owes its significance to the poem In Flanders Fields, written by Major (later Lieutenant-Colonel) John McCrae, a field surgeon in the Canadian artillery, in the midst of the Second Battle of Ypres, in Belgium, in May 1915.

Buying and wearing a poppy is a great way to remember and to help.

God bless the men and women who fought and continue to fight to provide us with the liberties we enjoy today.

The Lady and I always make time to stop and have a chat with at least a few vets each year while they're handing out poppies.
I stopped and yesterday on my way home and had a nice conversation with a gentleman.
I was already wearing a poppy and he said to me:
Veteran: "What are you doing here young man, you already have a poppy on."
Dan: "I've come to have a chat with you sir. My wife and I always make it a point not only just to put a bit of money into your poppy boxes, but to get nto know they people who are giving them away as well."
Veteran: "Well, God Bless you young man! Take a poppy for the Mrs. then!"
Of course I made a donation, and we had a nice little chat before we both continued on with our days.DANGER

My Dad was a vet of WW11, and every year since he passed away we go to his grave and spread at least 10 poppies around showing our love and thanks for helping keep this a free country.

My 96 year old grandpa passed away a few days ago. He was a WWII veteran and was named after his uncle who was killed in Ypres in WWI. Remembrance Day is going to be especially important to our family this year.
