I was at SDM last night at about 9:30 and one of the employees was marking down a whole bunch of stuff. Lady Speed Stick was on for $1 and Olay body wash for $2, as well as all kinds of hand soap, men's deodorant, Avenno hair products for $1.
I was pretty stoked as I had coupons for most of the stuff marked down but I had left them at home which is like a 2 minute drive from the store. There was a ton of the stuff marked down left and the store was literally empty, so I raced home and was back in 5 minutes to find just about everything GONE!!!! I couldn't believe it, then I see the girl from cosmetics pushing around a cart that was literally over flowing with the marked down products. I thought she was moving them to the clearance isle so asked her where she was moving it all to as I wanted to buy some it. She replied that she was purchasing it herself.
What!?!?! I think they might have been upset if I had cleared the shelves like that, and why even bother putting up the little stickers to mark it down if the employees are just scooping it all up. Very frustrating!
I did manage to get 2 full size size olay body washes for $1 and a full size Dial hand soap pump for $1 but I could have got 3 deodorants free and some great prices for Aveeno hair stuff! boo!
After reading some of the comments, i just want to add, that i think it was ok for the staff member to buy some of the clearance items, it was just a bit upsetting that she had a whole cart full and wouldn't share. I shouldn't pick on her just because she is staff, I would have been disappointed regardless of who was pushing the overflowing cart.Last edited by mommymonika; Thu, Feb 23rd, 2012 at 11:46 AM.

The same thing happened to me at SDM. They had about a dozen bottles of Joico Color Endure shampoo and conditioner, with the pump. They are normally close to $20.00 each and were marked down to $5.00 on liquidation. I didn't have much money on me, and wanted to buy at least 2 more, so I bought one bottle of each. It was almost closing time, so I knew I couldn't go back until the next morning. I brought my daughter with me the very next a.m. so she could get a couple also. When I went to the liquidation rack, they were all gone. I asked the girl at the cashier (the same one from the night before) if they were moved, and she said, "no, we who work here bought them all when I saw how cheap they were when I scanned yours. I didn't think it was proper at all, because I've never bought out any product, out of respect for other shoppers.

I don't think they should be allowed to shop while on shift either. They are getting paid to work, not shop. Its not because I'm trying to be mean by saying that, but because SDM has those liquidation sales, or any sales, for their customers.......NOT for the employees to clear out those sales while on shift.

I would complain. They should only be able to buy it if they are on break and shouldn't be able to gather carts of items when they are supposed to be working.

That is pretty sucky, It's definitely wrong for an employee to be shopping on the job. But maybe the women was on break? Or perhaps her shift was over. It was wrong of her to clear the shelf regardless. But if you worked at shoppers drug mart, and there was a shelf full of clearance items you wanted to get your hands on, wouldn't you score some the first chance you got?(on your break or immediately after your shift) People are very quick to jump to conclusions. I shop on my breaks at walmart. But during my shifts, I sometimes have to put cart fulls of merchandise away, and there are people who snarl at me for "shopping on the job".

I have to say that it was wrong of her to be shopping on her shift if that was what she was doing but if her shift was over then ok but dont clear the shelf. also maybe her family really needed the items and was on a tight budget like the rest of us.we will never know but we cant judge as we dont know the whole story . sorry that you missed out on the great deals that is really to bad but hopefully she needed them more.

I have family that work in retail and they always shop on their break. It is one of the last things they want to do after work as they've been there all day and just want to get out. IMHOP ...I don't see anything wrong with clearing the shelf if something is on clearance. That's the whole point of clearance items...to get them gone ASAP.

I don't work in retail and never have....please don't be mad but I disagree.
I think if you work at SDM, it's a perk of your job to have access to sales/clearance.
I don't think it's unfair at all.
What do SDM employees make, probably close to minimum wage right? Is it so wrong that once in a while, they get some advantage for working there?

Yes but you need to be generous to your fellow shoppers and not take every sale item so that others may get a chance as well other wise they might as well just sell it all to the staff personally without telling customers.

I personally have no problem with the staff shopping any time they like, my issue was taking all the items. Does that person really need the 15 deodorants that were there? I know there's no policy against it or anything, it was just frustrating and not great for customer relations when a staff takes 15 of a clearance item in front of customers who would like a few. I'd like to think, if someone told me they wanted to buy one or two of the 15 I had in my cart, I'd offer them at least 1. Just saying!
