Our gas in NB is regulated I think.
It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.

Geez 12 paragraphs for that email to get to the point (it wants to encourage a boycott, in case you stopped reading). Anyway, I will burst this bubble. Just a few people boycotting them won't do anything.
These are some of the biggest oil companies in the world who make lots and lots of money from industrial clients who need oil (look at all the plastics we consume in a day. That's all made with oil). Consumers who boycott them will only succeed in having problems finding a gas station that isn't one of these and the companies won't even notice if several thousand customers vanish, let alone lower their retail prices.
The email is even wrong because they are not the same company. Esso is owned by ExxonMobil. Petro-Canada is owned by Suncor. They have different stock tickers and everything.
Also, why single out these two and not some of the other huge ones? Shell is ginormous.
Besides, like Penguin said, there's lots of reasons gas prices increase.

Plus places like Wal*Mart, Canadian Tire , Costco etc buy surplus supplies from the big refineries.
They are not concerned who they buy from and unless you know whose supplies they have bought, you can still be supporting THE BIG OIL by buying your gas there.

I don't buy gas from those places anyways. We only buy our gas from Canadian Tire Gas Bar so we can get CT money back, then redeem it when they have dollar sales.

Darth Penguin is correct, one gas tanker may go to several stations in one community.
I had to laugh at the 300 million part, the population of Canada is 34 million and a lot fewer vehicles.
I have three family members employed by Suncor, so even if you could convince a boycott it would ultimately impact Canada employees and not gas prices. My bread and butter is supplied by an Oil Company.
Gas prices are impacted by oil prices, which is impacted by the global market. It basically comes down to supply and demand.
As long as people want gas and keep buying it at these prices (myself included) then prices will keep going up.
P.S. No offense meant to the OP, your heart was in the right place.Last edited by RedEng; Thu, Mar 29th, 2012 at 10:36 PM.

Unfortunately one of the issues to contend with is that a large percentage of our gas price is tax. HSt alone gave us a huge tax hike when it came in...

I assume the email was originated by an American because it talks about the price per gallon in the middle, but some Canadian must've changed it to target one of the Canadian companies. I hate these kinds of emails that are forwarded with no substance. People just assume they're correct. Why can't people forward news articles or journal articles? Those have facts backing them up at least.
Oh and another thing. The American company is Halliburton with 2 "L"s.

superstore gas station just opened and I get superbucks (money on receipt to use inside superstore purchases)...and they have been lower than the other new (shell) gas station usually by 2-3 cents but yesterday they were both 1.29 when everyone else was 1.33-1.34 I get home from work late and both are at 1.34.....my own little price war
