Feel free to move this thread as I'm not sure where to put this. Due to the frugal lifestyle my family has I was able to make a big decision last November to go back to school. I am leaving a fairly decent job in August to do this. I went to college and I had always wanted to go to University, but I was 17 and lived on my own. To advance in my career now, or to get the same job in Southern Ontario I need a degree. I am 41 years old and last September my daughter left for university herself. I will be out of the full time workforce for 21 months. My husband and I have enough money saved for our daughter that we can still help her through school during that time too. If we hadn't lived the way we did when my husband lost his job in March we would have been up the creek. Instead we took a step back, re-evaluated everything and now he is going back as well. Insstead of his severence package going to bills, we had no debt and lived on one salary, so it went in the bank for our new life in September. From April to September we continue to live on my salary. Not to say this wasn't a rocky road of "SHould I really be doing this", but at least I had the choice. In the end, that is what frugality and living below your means is all about. It gives you a choice. It gives you some power over your life.

I just love reading things like this. a big CONGRATS to you and your family for choosing to live life this way. So many people are trying to keep up with the Jones thinking this is what will make them happy. In reality, what makes us happy is a simple life, and being able to make these big decisions that ARE life changing. I am so very happy for you, and your family. Best of luck.

Way to go! It's not easy to make big decisions; frankly, it's downright scary! I want to congratulate you on taking this step and wish you all the best in your studies. I imagine that once you get into the swing of things with University, you'll find it to be challenging but quite do-able and that a lot of your worries will disappear. Good luck and keep us all posted through your journey!!
