Can someone clarify this for me just to make sure I'm right? It'd normally be $170 right? But instead it's $210... But there might be a $250 (based on previous years) coming up?... So basically if I redeem or don't redeem I risk losing $40 either way...

except the usual bonus redemption held several times a year is $200 so its only an extra $10 instead of $50

I don't see them having another mega redemption after. After the Kraft/Huggies storm of people getting thousands upon thousands of extra points, I think they have scaled back as they know there are way more people wanting to redeem this year than previous years. Hence why they are waiting until after this weekend to give the GC points. (so the rumor is) They may have big profits but they still have to make up for their mistakes with the other promos so it makes sense to them to make the redemption value less. They also know that they have one of the best rewards programs out there so even if people say they aren't going back, many still will imo.

I think I am going to focus on collecting the majority of my points earlier in the year. I always seem to go on a collecting spree starting in August. I do collect throughout the year but as Christmas approaches I tend to make a greater effort. It would be less stressful if I had enough points for one or two redemptions before all of this chaos begins. That way I could sit back and not depend on these last minute promos. I would still take part in them if I wanted but would not need those extra points. This year I did not go as crazy as past years and I am glad. I will be getting some free ps3 and vita games for my kids along with some other gifts for family and I am happy with that. Although I am very disappointed with SDM today I have decided to stay positive. They make me sssoooooo mad but I know that after I redeem my points and head home with all of my free stuff I will love them again and start collecting for next Christmas!!!

and as for a mega before the end of the year I would think that'd be a very likely possibility. If you have enough for more than one I would do one for the xmas gifts/electronics you need now as they won't always carry some of them and save theothers for regular groceries and such, that what I would do if i had more points

I collect and redeem throughout the year too. I try NOT to accumulate too much points (once I get past a certain threshold, I start redeeming $30/$60 weekly for groceries etc) as I don't trust SDM NOT to renumerate the points system. They have done that at least once and they also got rid of a lower redemption level. And I only have had the card for 4.5 years! I will not spend $$$ just to get the points, when I can get better deals elsewhere.
But recently I found that I can order my daughter's special milk (high calorie) through SDM pharmacy and I can pay with points. So there's where all my 500k+ points are going from now on

It really depends on what you need and when you want it. If you're just redeeming for regular household items and you don't need them right now then there's no harm in holding on to your points, it's not like this deal isn't going to come around again. Personally I was planning on redeeming in December regardless and was prepared to redeem at $170 if I had to so this is a still a good deal to me.
