I don't want to come across as an unloving person, or even unappreciative, but I'm getting really tired of getting photos of children for Christmas. While I totally understand that it may be all that a person can afford, but I really don't want a photo of your kid. I don't care that the child is a cousin/ niece/nephew, I really don't know what to do with that 8x10 photo. I don't really want to hang a photo of your kid on my wall.

If you are one of the childless, who wants a child, but only recently finished university and started a career, have been married for over 10 years and are in your early thirties, you probably understand. I love my niece and nephews, but how many photos do I need of your kid.

LOL! Some people are pretty self-absorbed. A lot of people think that the arrival of their children is going to affect the lives of everyone around them really dramatically and that everyone is going to drop everything to admire and dote on their pregnant bellies, babies, or small children. My sister-in-law used to have 8x10s made of our nephew, too. Somehow, she thought it was a great gift for birthdays and Christmas, but failed to notice that we don't display photos much in our home at all! One year, we took a bunch of pictures of my husband (her brother) in silly poses and making different faces and put them in her birthday card. I guess she got the hint, because the photos as gifts stopped after that.

I only send photos to the members of our families who live far away since they don't get to see the brood on a regular basis. But that is only our parents, siblings and my aunt. Any-one else who wants a picture has to ask for one..I'd never send an un-requested phot to a less close relative.

Lol, I am so guilty of this!! When my children were babies/toddlers we gave framed pictures of them as gifts to relatives all the time. Now that I'm older and see this being done by others, I get it.....it's too much and not as wonderful as I thought back then.

I do put photos in cards but only to some family members, we don't live close so they don't get to see my daughter. I don't put them in everyone's i know everyone is not interested.

I like getting photos but 8 x 10 is way too large. They are nice in a card, or in addition to a gift (if you exchange gifts with the giver) but a framed photo of someone else's child doesn't replace a Christmas gift...

Wow! An 8x10? I have (in the past) sent a small wallet size photo to family and close ( I repeat CLOSE) friends only for them to see how much DS has grown. I put it in with the Christmas card. But I don't expect anyone to keep it!

What are you going to do with it/them?

I only give out pics once a year to grandparents, my parents, my sister and brother and then the kids father and its their school pics, if anyone wants other pics of my kids they are all on my fb they can just check them out there when ever i post some pics of my kids which is maybe twice a year during summer vaction and christmas. School pics cost alot anyways so if you get one from me you should be lucky other than that my friends always see me and my kids. But i do understand getting pics as a Christmas gift. Anyone that got my kids pics this year had them in a Christmas card given out the 1st week in Dec when I got my kids pics back.

OP, I really get your rant. I was sort of guilty of this in the beginning ( when I thought all 3 of mine were the most beautiful kids ever!), but it was the cost of the school pics ( package rip offs) that started to get to me eventually. I then started getting a single 8 x10 of each kid for our own living room and a couple wallet sized for DH and I to carry.
No one else really cares, it is true.
Btw, I gave 3 close relatives 8 x 10 calendars with my furbabies pics on them this year!! A WM photo special!! ( it was meant as a joke, I hope they don't think I've lost my mind)

The calendar idea featuring your pets is a good one to use for a change from family photos!

The size of the kid photos in 8X10 given as gifts is a surprise to me-parents/grandparents usually keep the large ones but the wallet-size photos are the ones that get sent/shared (number of them vs cost of mailing large pic) with friends and family.
I'm sure when the children hit tween and teen years, those wallet size photos might be the only way they can get same photos from their peers (via exchanges), who may not be in their social circles once high school concludes. Could be a memory keeper then.

I think the only people a gift like that is appropriate for is grandparents of the children.

Aside from that, I would TOTALLY do 4x6 photo christmas cards, but I don't think I'd ever send a larger photo than that.

I'm totally the opposite, I love getting pictures of all my nieces and nephews. They all live so far away that we rarely get to see them. That being said, I like getting the wallet size pictures having an 8x10 or even a 5x7 of each one every year would take up a lot of space and be excessive. I've started a scrapbook where I put all of their pictures each year

I take pics of my kids all the time, but we only get the professional ones done every three or so years and those I send to family.....and I generally wait until I have had enough people ask me for the pics before I go and get them done. School pics are too expensive, so I get the big package from Walmart.
i despise the school pics. They cost too much money and they are not even very good.
Love like crazy everyday and smile.

I give photos to my sister and brother of my kids but only wallets. I also make calendars every year and give them out to family. They seem to like it. I would appreciate it if was my niece. We give grandparents photos of the kids as gifts. As well we made pottery ornaments for the Christmas tree. Really, what do grandparents need? They have more money then us (with $1300/month in day care costs), which equals disposable income plus, as my husband says they have way too much stuff after collecting things for several years.
