Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence is urging unity among protesters and aboriginal leaders in the grassroots Idle No More movement, as she enters day 23 of her hunger strike aimed at winning a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
"We need to continue to encourage and stand in solidarity as Indigenous Nations," Spence said in a statement Wednesday. "We are at a historical moment in time, and I ask that grassroots, chiefs and all community members come together in one voice."

this chief is prepared to die and harper has only to talk with her -

where the hell is my prime minister?

While I do think that something needs to be done to address First Nations issues, they really picked the wrong individual to lead the change. I find it suspicious (ok, so I have issues with most politicians!) that Chief Spence started this movement when an investigation was going on into how funds were misspent at Attawapiskat ($$$ spent on frivolous things like a zamboni, etc, while her people/constituents were suffering). Over the Xmas holidays, this came up in conversation - lots of salty comments about this from my friend's aunt (she's Mohawk), but little sympathy.

Canada PM says will meet with native leaders amid protests

What I don't like about this is that hunger strikes etc. are no way to negotiate in a democracy. It's blackmail basically and if they are going to use tactics like that what will stop other groups from doing things like that too to get attention from the government.

This is why i LOVE living in Canada! Seriously, our problems are so trivial compared to other countries. I am so thankful we live in such a well run country that our prime minster was accused once of firing a cabinet minister for corruption without proof! LOL! In other countries, where else would people get angry the leader did not PROVE corruption!

In all seriousness, for as long as I have lived up here (Most years since 1996) I admired the fact Canada has so little problems. Even the silly sponsorship scandal years ago, although ugly, almost every country this is normal operating procedure.

I LOVE Canada and all it's wonderful 'issues'!

Canada jobs take flight, though economy stays grounded
Canada's economy created far more jobs than expected ... It was the third surprisingly strong jobs report over the past four
Canada has long recovered all the jobs lost during the 2008-09 recession

    YAHOO For Canada!!!!

Im a bit confused, from what Ive read, what was in the omnibus bill was requested by some first nations leaders, and yet any who say that are being called liars.

I dont like that those who support this movement call anyone and everyone who oppose it racists regardless of what they say.

I don't agree when politicians cave in like this. It happened this year with the students here and has caused nothing but trouble since. They are never happy, it's never enough and this situation is the same. How much more money do they want? $90 million to one town since 2006? Who has all this money? I think we already know the answer to that. No trickle down effect here either.

I dont like that people are criticizing harper for you know, running the country instead of dropping everything and meeting her on her terms, and for trying to exert control.

On social media and at some protests some people such as the occupy movement and anti harper movements are "helping out" i.e. taking part to divert attention for their own causes.

Apparently many in the movement are calling on Harper to resign and dissovle parliament and for Paul martin to take over till another election.

They want Harper to resign? For what? Good thing the NHL lockout is over.

There are many movements trying to hijack this one.

Occupy canada is having a field day by latching on to it. They dont care about them but want to remain relevant again.

    Oh.

Within the next couple of months, many of those people are probably going to flood AB/SK once Obama approves the Keystone XL pipeline being built right now. I'd wager many of them are going to attempt to stop construction or pull some stunts.

I would not even be surprised to see some Hollywood Celebrities in SW Saskatchewan to join the protest.

I talked to soem in the movement on twitter and they were very reasonable people. One person mentioned that she wanted non first nations peoples not to get involved as they have their own agenda and dont want this movement watered down or distracted. A lot of the first nations peoples it seems are unhappy that OWS movement is tyring to latch on.
