Kijiji frustration

People make me SO MAD sometimes.

We're moving at the end of the month, and I put some furniture for "free if you come pick it up."
There were four things total. An Omega film enlarger, an antique Singer sewing table, a canon AE-1 with accessories (this is $75, actually), and some entertainment units.

This post is specifically about the entertainment units.

They are beautiful, solid pine, custom-built to my parents' orders before I was born. We are GIVING them away because we don't have the space and they're too awesome to haul to the dump. Within a 1/2 hour of posting the ad - at 11pm!-, there were 16 replies.

EVERY. LAST. PERSON. FLAKED.

Some people lied to me. Some just didn't get back to me. One guy called twice, told me he was having problems with finding a truck and then... dissapeared. Another lady decided they were "too heavy". I hung around the house for THREE DAYS waiting on people that could "only come around 2" or 4, or 10am and then never showed up.

I am tempted to relist them for $20 to prevent stupid people from just replying to every free ad on there. WHY are people stupid? Argh!


Has anyone else had this experience? Any tips on how I can prevent this? Obviously the "Serious enquiries only" part meant nothing to the people responding.

What about calling a St Vincent De Paul they pick up after garage sale so maybe they will come get them.
Or if you are keeping them on Kijiji move them to your driveway witha free sign on them and put in the ad that they are first come first serve...that way either someone from Kijiji or a passing treasure hunter will pick them up

That's a great idea, putting them out front, but they are too big to put outside. The garage door is pretty much flush with the road, and the landscaper people would DIE if we plopped them on the lawn.

I just can't understand why people are so mean. It's pretty disrespectful to just not show up when you say you're going to.

I will try with kijiji once more, and then call St.Vincent. Thank you for that, as well.

You will have much better luck if you Freecycle them. I have found that peolple on kijiji looking for free stuff can be kinda flakey. But freecyclers are generally very respectful and appreciative. Search your locale in yahoo groups for freecycle. There is also a freecycle thread somewhere here on SC . . .

Make sure you keep their names and emails on file so if you ever list anything again and they contact you, you can tell them to take a flying leap.

I mean, unforeseeable circumstances can come up, medical emergencies, etc, but it's common courtesy to at least call or email you and say they can't come. Or even if they simply change their minds.

Nah Kijiji people have a reputation as jerks,I'm one of them but not the jerk type.
Freecyclers can be jerks too,again not me,but I see less of them noted.
P.S. Please buy my junk off Kijiji.
Lastly Canadian Diabetes Association and the Sally Ann will also pick up your stuff.

I sell only on ebay now even though I make less money.. it is reliable and you can offer local pick up. I also like the other suggestion of putting it out on the front. I often do that on bulk garbage time and it's gone in an hour.

If you called it an antique and listed it for $150.00 obo, you'd probably do better...people have the perception that if it's free, it's not worth it....silly, but true...good luck...
