My home was broken into, a lot of my electronics and cords were stolen. Actually, just about all of them. It's scary enough to come home and find out that someone has broken into your home and ransacked all of your things and stolen anything of any monetary value, but it's like a second stab wound when the insurance company tells you that you're not even able to file a claim unless you can provide proof of ownership of your things that were stolen.
My advice to everyone, KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS. Keep your serial numbers too. Keep ALL OF IT.
This is such a headache. Why would I have a receipt for a computer I purchased four years ago?
The people I have in my life have been really incredible too me after everything, letting me borrow their things and such, but honestly, I just don't know what I'm going to do if I can't get this replaced. This thread is currently associated with: N/A

oh no, I'm so sorry to hear your awful story. It's so terrible.
Glad you have good people around you and I hope the insurance company gets their stuff together and helps you out soon.

I'm kind of shocked about your insurance company. You may want to consider filing a complaint.

And for receipts, make photocopies. Receipts fade away to nothing after a couple months. I hope you can get something out of this, this sucks!

Yikes....what a disappointing mess to come home to. Sorry to hear your bad news.
Insurance company wants some proof that the items a person is claiming actually existed and belonged to them. A tip I have heard several times is to take photos of the interior of your house and of your belongings in the event it is necessary to file a claim. i.e. take a couple shots of your living room and then take individual shots of the various items in the bigger picture. Go through every room in your house this way. Save your dozens (or hundreds) of photos on a flash drive and store it somewhere else. i.e. not in your own house. In the event you have a fire or theft, you may not be able to produce all your receipts but you can produce reasonable evidence of what you owned. Wish I was giving you this tip before the theft, westcoastblondie. So many coupons....so little time!

Oh, so sorry this has happened to you. Hope you made a police report right away.
What Dianne says about photos is very true - but you might have candid pics which you have taken in your home which include some of the items which were taken.
Also, even if you don't have receipts, you may be able to dig back into your credit card and/or bank statements to get some of the info you need.
You should have also registered your warranties for the items, maybe you can find out info that way too.

Hmmm. OP, a lady lost her grandmother's heirloom bracelet when grandmother died at home. She suspected theft and casually went to local pawn shops asking "to buy this type of bracelet". I think this may be where your things might be. Then the police can be contacted, maybe.

Unfortunately for me, I don't have a facebook or anything along those lines. Because I live out of province from all of my friends and family, I've been asking them to all go through their email in boxes to see if they still have the pictures I sent them of my apartment shortly after I moved here. Soo far, no luck.
And insurance is just being awful about it. I've been thinking I might start going around to pawn shops to see if I can find any of my stuff. It just is a really ty situation all around.
