Elle Canada Beauty Grand Prix Box Rant!

Okay, Okay I know I shouldn't complain about free and all but I just have to! This is the first year I have been selected for this program so naturally I was super excited to receive my box. I just pulled out the first four products to test for week one and two of the four are just completely unusable! Neither reason is really Elle Canada's fault, but it just sucks that I can't even properly test out some of the products because I can't be seen in public wearing them!

First off, the foundation. I applied it and it makes my face look like a glowing orange pumpkin. The only way I could use this foundation is if I went and got a fake and bake orange tan. Seriously?! I thought maybe Elle Canada decided not to read my questionnaire and sent me things off shade and I was prepared to email and complain! I cheated on this one and peeled off the label since I can't even use the product to review appropriately anyway. It is labeled as light! Um no offense (brand name)* but the last time I checked no one with "light" skin looked like an oompa loompa. In fact, I don't think I have ever met anyone with a natural skin colouring as such. The only way you can probably sell this is to all those "light" skinned people that use fake tanners and tanning beds for that ghastly orange hue.

Second product I picked up was a lip gloss. I'm a huge makeup junkie so I'm excited that I have lip gloss which is the only real beauty product in my box! I'm sort of sad about that since I love playing with makeup, but is probably just as well since I have too much to begin with! Anyway, this product I already knew what it was based on the shape of the container and actually own a couple already. My beef with this one is the colour. It literally looks like I smeared concealer on my lips! I would say whoever saw this shade and thought that is the perfect colour to send light skinned girls needs to be fired! Since when did it become a good look to sport lips the same shade as your skin tone? I say never! While I like the two shades in this that I actually purchased, I can't understand how this one is so vastly different in application, unless of course it's the colour making it apply badly. I can see every brush stroke in this shade when I apply it to my lips just as you would when you apply white out to a mistake. This stuff is bad! The colour is horrendous. It's matte with no sort of glitter or shimmer making it appear even more like concealer than a lip gloss. I feel like if I wore this in public people would think I was ill having lips as light as my skin.


I haven't checked out the rest of the products yet since I am trying to do them in order one from each category for a week like they ask so will have to see what the other shades are like and hopefully they included some more wearable options! I mean I hate to complain about something free and that a bunch of people probably really wanted to get into, but I feel like I waited so long to finally be chosen for this only to have two of the four products from my first week be virtually untestable because they are not compatible with my colouring.

All these things you mention can be part of your review for them - that's that point of the program, no?

i got a mascara and some coupons.
the coupons sucked so i gave them away and my daughter is saving the mascara for halloween.

I hope so! I checked out the online portion and there are star ratings and then comments type of set up. I suppose I can complain, but I know that those comments for sure won't be published in Elle Canada when they come out with that issue...I am hoping there is something in this box that I love and can write a great review on!

Oh the lip gloss is definitely a colour...Unfortunately for it, it's the colour of flesh. It's horrible. I tried it again this morning and it's so paste-y and you can see the brush strokes on your lips. It's a perfect match to my skin tone so it makes me look deathly ill.

I had no idea who that was so I had to google it. Then I found a pic and LOL'd so hard because that is what I would have looked like today if I had of used the products and left the house! My face wouldn't have matched my neck or the rest of my bodies skin tone, and my lips would have been stark white against my orange face!

This was a different box. I received it also. It had the mascara and a few sample packets with coupons. The box I am complaining about is the Beauty Grand Prix which I think they select 100 people or something like that to test out products and write reviews. We have to (or are supposed to) test each product for a week straight before reviewing and we have until December to complete everything.

Nude lips are the style this year. Was big at the Film Fest. Heavy eye makeup and nude lips so you don't look overdone.

What a bummer. I was part of this once and I got a box full of hand lotions . I was hoping for the exciting stuff like makeup or hair products or body but no .. About 20 different hand lotions (some nasty smelling and some nasty feeling)

When is te signup for this anyway ?

I can't remember how long ago it was that I signed up. Probably sometime in the summer. I was originally placed as a standby person so I guess that means someone must not have contacted them back in enough time and I got to take their place.

This week is going a bit better. The makeup remover wipes are nice, the hand cream smells so good even though I still hate hand cream, the lip gloss is sheer and actually wearable, but the concealer I still can't test because this one is also very orange. I'm supposed to use it under my eyes and on blemishes as per the instructions, but I tried it last night and it creates an orange ring under my eyes, and highlights pimples by turning them from pink/red to a lovely shade of orange. Not only that it has a weird brush applicator that doesn't apply the product where I want it to go and it sheds like crazy! So not only do I have orange pimples, but I get to pick brush hairs off my face too LOL!

I'm doing that after I have done the reviews of them. The black ink from the Elle logo comes off them onto my hands each time I use them! It would drive me nuts to have the paper still on them later because of the logo rubbing off issue. I couldn't figure out where the black marks on my face were coming from until I noticed my hands were covered in black and the label was fading!
