Russia to be punished for ‘completely out of order’ actions after Worlds final loss to Canada

On Monday, IIHF president Rene Fasel had some choice — and ominous — remarks for Team Russia, which left the ice before Canada’s anthem was played following Sunday’s 6-1 loss in the World Hockey Championship final.


“The IIHF has its own protocol and some sort of punishment will be handed down,” Fasel told TASS, per Reuters. “When I saw what had happened, I was very upset. In the 29 world championships that I have had the honor of attending, this is the first time I have seen something like this.
“What the Russian team did was completely out of order.”

Following the game, the Russian team stayed out for the medal ceremony and individual award announcements, but left the surface prior to ‘O Canada’ being played.

We planned our future in the back of a humanitarian aid truck on a mattress of bulletproof vests and arctic sleeping bags.
We got engaged in an international airport in a crowd of anxious lovers and mothers, brothers and strangers, who gasped and hugged and applauded and cried when I dropped to one knee.

We're getting married in the heart of a city we call home, far away from the place we met, the place we got to know each other, the place we fell in love, the place we planned our future.

We're getting married in a peaceful community park-- without barricades or burning buses, protestors or occupied buildings, tear gas or alarm bells or bullet-proof vests-- but with the beautiful music, rituals and traditions that made it so hard to leave (as well as a few others from neighbouring counties).

Camouflaged vyshyvanka for Homeland defenders


Wednesday, May 20. DONBAS — Deputy Minister of Information Policy Tetyana Popova and Advisor to Minister of Defence of Ukraine Tetyana Rychkova visited the 81^st Detached Airborne Brigade accomplishing tasks in the east of Ukraine.

On the occasion of the Day of Vyshyvanka (traditional Ukrainian embroidered skirt), as well as in the framework of the All-Ukrainian Campaign ‘Present a Vyshyvanka to a Defender’ which is organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and Ministry of Information Policy, women presented special embroidered T-shirts with national symbols to paratroopers.

According to Tetyana Popova, oak leaves symbolize longevity, patience, strength and dignity.
“We would like our heroes to have a protective amulet,” Tetyana Popova stressed.

Canadian surgeons perform surgeries in military hospital

Tuesday, May 19. KYIV – 25 Canadian surgeons arrived to Ukraine and performed over 30 surgeries along with Ukrainian surgeons.


According to Dr. Oleh Antonyshyn, Professor of Plastic Surgery, University of Toronto, this is the second such mission of the Canadian medics in Ukraine.


“We came last autumn and performed over 100 surgeries,” Oleh Antonyshyn told.


The Canada Ukraine Foundation (CUF) under the auspices of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress initiated this mission. According to Christina Valer, Humanitarian Initiatives, CUF, the charity concert was organized to collect money for it. In September 2014, 1,200 Canadians collected the amount of CAD$ 200,000 for Ukrainian soldiers.


The Canada Ukraine Foundation (CUF) was established to coordinate, develop, organize and deliver assistance projects generated by Canadians and directed to Ukraine. The foundation is registered as a charity foundation.
Such missions will be organized in the future and this autumn a new mission will arrive to Ukraine.

Canadian doctors and nurses return from successful 2nd medical mission in Ukraine



Toronto, Canada (May 20) – A specialized team of Canadian health professionals recently returned home after completing a medical mission in Ukraine. This mission marked the second medial mission the Canada Ukraine Foundation has organized in as many years. The team worked alongside Ukrainian doctors and nurses in performing reconstructive complex surgical procedures on victims of the Euromaidan movement and Vladimir Putin’s invasion into Eastern Ukraine. All surgeries took place in Kyiv at the Ukrainian Military Hospital.

The medical team of 22 professionals was comprised entirely of volunteers and included surgeons, anesthetists, and nurses. The team was assembled from across Canada. 49 patients from across Ukraine with complex post-traumatic defects and deformities were seen in consultation.

A total of 53 reconstructive procedures were performed in 29 patients between May 10-16, 2015; for a total of 116 operating hours.

The procedures included:

• 13 upper extremity reconstructions
• 5 skull reconstructions
• 14 facial soft tissue (nose/eyelid/lip/cheek/scalp) reconstructions
• 20 facial bone reconstructions (mandible, orbit, midface, nose)

“During this mission we focused our efforts primarily on injuries to the skull and face. The majority of the injuries sustained by the patients were shrapnel/explosive wounds and gunshot wounds,” said Dr. Oleh Antonyshyn, Head of the Adult Craniofacial Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Professor of Plastic Surgery, University of Toronto.

“Multiple procedures were done in many patients, by one or two surgical teams, working concurrently or consecutively. And perhaps most importantly, we have already identified 10 patients for major reconstructive surgery on our next mission.”

During this medical mission, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rob Nicholson visited the Ukrainian Military Hospital. He met with patients and Canadian and Ukrainian medical professionals. Just prior to his visit the Government of Canada announced $1.2 million in support for building additional health care capacity in the Ukrainian military.
