today’s battle in the war zone in eastern Ukraine

The battle was in the village of Bila Kamyanka. At first, the enemy attacked positions of the 72 Brigade in the area of Starohnativka; a battle ensued. Our side retreated a little, then reinforcements of soldiers arrived from the Armed Forces and the DUC Right Sector ЗСУ і ДУК ПС. With a joint effort we pushed away the enemy and entered Bila Kamyanka, but because of the inequality in the forces (a large number of armoured vehicles came up to them), we could not fix the position, and all returned to the situation of yesterday. Unless, on the left flank, possibly, the territory under the control of Ukraine was slightly increased, taking over what the opponent previously controlled.

Dead: 7 soldiers, according to updated data : 3 from the Right Sector Volunteer battalion and 4 from the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Wounded: 5 from the Right Sector Volunteer battalion and 6 from the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Ukrainians in Russia remember Ukraine’s massacred elite

Editorial Note: The Sandarmokh mass graves were discovered in 1997 by members of the Memorial Society, Russia’s best known human rights group, founded in 1989 under the auspices of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov. The organization has been active in exposing Soviet-era repression. The Kremlin is attempting to close down the group, labeling it a “foreign agent.”

On August 5, Ukrainians in Russia commemorated the victims of Stalinist repression executed in the Sandarmokh pine forest in the Republic of Karelia in northwestern Russia, reports Ukrinform, August 8.


Valeriy Semenko, an activist of the Ukrainian movement in Moscow, described the event:
“On August 5, we held a general meeting in the Sandarmokh forest. Afterwards the Ukrainian participants gathered near the memorial cross dedicated to the “slaughtered sons of Ukraine.” The Ukrainian delegation could be identified by flags and embroidered shirts. Many people came up and expressed their respect for Ukraine,” he said.

Given the state of Russian-Ukrainian relations, this is the second year that no official delegation from Ukraine has taken part in the commemorative events in Sandarmokh.

The Ukrainian organization Kalyna in the Republic of Karelia has been honoring the memory of the victims of Stalinist repression for 18 years, On August 5, 2005, through the efforts of the Kalyna activists and the group’s head, Larysa Skrypnykova, a memorial cross was erected at the site of the mass executions.

Sandarmokh is a tract of pine forest in the Medvezhyegorsk region of the Republic of Karelia. Here on an area of some 10 hectares (25 acres), the NKVD in the 1930s executed more than 9500 people of 58 nationalities. Among the main victims were exiled settlers and prisoners from the White Sea-Baltic Canal (canal constructed by the forced labor of Gulag inmates, where some 25,000 workers died — Ed.) and the Solovetsky camps in the Soviet Gulag system, as well as residents of nearby villages. Over all, some 236 firing pits have been identified on this territory.

Fake Military Uniforms

A factory in the so-called Luhansk People's Republic (LNR) is sewing uniforms imitating those of the Armed Services of Ukraine to be used by the Russian and terrorist forces in provocations in eastern Ukraine, the ATO (Anti-Terrorist Operation) press center reported Monday night, August 10.

The terrorists intend to stage these provocations in eastern Ukraine in order to accuse Ukrainian military of escalating the conflict. The fake uniforms are being sewn in a factory in Sverdlovsk, a city in the Luhansk Oblast that is outside of Kyiv’s control, ATO reported.

NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov said that, according to available information, Russian intelligence services are preparing provocations on the occupied territories in eastern Ukraine that are designed to result in high numbers of victims. “This bloody crime is being organized under the guise of attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in response to numerous provocations.” he said.

Cyborg Oleksandr Mashonkin’s spirit unbroken after 197 days of captivity



Lviv – For 197 days Ukrainian paratrooper, Oleksandr Mashonkin from the 80th Lviv Airborne Brigade was held prisoner by a group of “DNR” terrorists. On August 6, three soldiers were exchanged. Oleksandr has been home for a few days, but he still cannot believe it.

On January 21, Oleksandr Mashonkin was captured by a group of so-called “DNR” militants. He had been defending Donetsk Airport for two weeks. During the battle, concrete slabs fell and covered him completely. His helmet and armored vest saved him from severe injury. He recalls that at that moment a thought flashed through his head – Better to end it all now…. “I lay under all that rubble and such thoughts kept running through my head. No one could get to me and I couldn’t move. I lay there, trapped for ten hours – I couldn’t move my head, body and arms. Finally I managed to crawl out miraculously. I don’t know how, but I did it.” recalls the Cyborg.

Oleksandr was taken prisoner along with fourteen other soldiers. His ribs were broken; the other fighters, too, were in serious condition.

Oleksandr came home from the Donbas with severe contusions, 197 days of captivity, beatings, torture, hard labor, humiliation, and a nightmare experience. He remembers when the terrorist groups took him and other prisoners to Donetsk Airport, where the Cyborg had to pull the remains of his fellow countrymen from under the rubble. He will undergo treatment in the hospital for constant headaches and fractured ribs. And… he has to learn to live after all that he has gone through…
