My father was too young to serve at the beginning of the war. He was called to work for the British Admiralty repairing lifeboats in Liverpool. He said that they repaired the same lifeboats over and over as the Luftwaffe would strafe them with bullets. He had nightmares thinking that he might have missed one.
My mother was saved by a run in her nylon. She was invited to her friend's 17th birthday party, but she was late because she had to repair her nylon. The air-raid sirens went off and her dad wouldn't let her go. A bomb hit that party house killing all of her friends. Her dad was a fire warden who discovered them.
Some of the heros of the war never went to war.
Some of the heros of war went and came back. Some, of course went and never returned to their loved ones.
I'll be visiting my parents' grave, and attending services here on Nov. 11.

My wife and I got our poppies last night. Up until then, I couldn't find a poppy box.
Better late than never.

Found this on Facebook, did not know this!
A lovely military man selling poppies stopped me today and asked if he could reposition mine - while doing so he told me that women should wear their poppy on their right side; the red represents the blood of all those who gave their lives, the black represents the mourning of those who didn't have their loved ones return home, and the green leaf represents the grass and crops growing and future prosperity after the war destroyed so much. The leaf should be positioned at 11 o'clock to represent the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the time that World War One formally ended. He was worried that younger generations wouldn't understand this and his generation wouldn't be around for much longer to teach them.
I'm really pleased to have learnt some things today that I didn't know before, although must admit I've spent a rather obsessive afternoon wanting to rearrange quite a few strangers' poppies...

@Candini - about the poppy - that's from a UK site, but that's not what's recommended in Canada.
The Royal Canadian Legion states that for everyone, the poppy should be worn on the left side, close to the heart.

The vets came to Kiera's school. I was not there but I saw them leaving , 2 young soldiers and one 94 year old veteran of WWII. What struck me was he was so tiny, no more than 5'3".

Sheila Anderson, Silver Cross Mother: ‘A group no one wants to join’
The 2015-16 Silver Cross Mother, Sheila Andrerson, in her home in Yellowknife. Anderson is the mother of Corporal Jordan Anderson, one of the six Canadian soldiers killed in a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in 2007.
When a mother loses her son or daughter in Canadian military service, the Canadian Forces awards her a Silver Cross medal (also called the Memorial Cross). Each year, the Royal Canadian Legion appoints one National Memorial Silver Cross mother, who lays the wreath at the Remembrance Day ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa and performs other ceremonial duties throughout the year.
An interview with her

Jordan was close to completing his second six-month tour of Afghanistan when he was killed by a buried roadside bomb while on patrol in Panjwai district, about 20 kilometres from Kandahar City.
He died in his armoured vehicle with five other Canadian soldiers and their Afghan interpreter.
It was two weeks before his 27th birthday.
Born in Iqaluit, Jordan was a member of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry based out of Edmonton. He had been married for barely two years.
