andit: they're pine. we get them from the lumbermill, $2 for a large garbage bag. but i find these sometimes can have alot of dust (from the saw).

i was reading up on the uri thing. it sounds like it could be even tho she's at low risk for it. i guess once they get it they have it forever but it says no trip to vet is needed unless it's bothersome for the cat, and so far it's not but keeping a real close eye on it. she's eating (alot) and she's enjoying her chicken soup for her cold. but i still worry. she has no nasal drip, no breathing probs, no fever as far as i can tell (cause a fever would make you tired wouldn't it?). she's rambunctions as ever, eating fine, and acting normal. so hopefully it'll clear up on it's own. antibiotics don't cure it anyway, but vets give it to clear up other ailments that can go along with the virus that makes it worse.

Mollie has some allergies that make her eyes water and gobbery seems to be getting worse. Lately tho she's developed a cough that sounds more like she's choking on something and wheezing and the last few days it's gotten quite a bit worse, she coughed most of the morning. I know there is something dogs kept at a kennel can get that causes a cough but she never has stayed at a kennel or even overnight at the vet. She doesn't seem to be feeling very good lately either but still eats good amounts but has needed some encouragement to eat and if anything has been drinking quite a bit more water then normal. The vet said I could give her benadryl for her allergies wonder if that would help the cough as well. May try it just worries me as our dalmatian was on benadryl for severe skin allergies and started getting ummm extrapramidal symtoms like jerkiness among other things which were a result of the benadryl and he was a lot bigger then she is, so worries me.

wow. now that does sound like the upper respiratory thing. can u take her back to the vet and get some meds that might help the cough? or try andits have a bath/shower with the cat thing?

ok, now i have a confession to make. I am FORCED to eat humble pie, or chew crow or whatever it's called.

sobeys got back to me. i relayed the email to my hubby. only to discover that he did not go to the sobeys store i told him had the chicken held for him. he went to another location! omg, and i sent a complaint off. i'm prolly going to get sued now. i posted a public appology. that hubby of mine with his stupid selective hearing is going to land me in jail one of these times!

He was only at the vet for one night. They aren't bothering him now. I have to watch him use the litter box to see how much he's leaving. Still not much right now. Only four more days of giving him pills. I'll be glad when that's done.

How is the pilling going? You could try crushing the pill & mixing it in with some grated cheese or some tuna or a bit of his favourite cat food.

Have you ever tried giving pretend pills to get your critters used to them? Once a week, I open the cat's mouth & stick a tiny piece of cheese in, as if it were a pill. He looks at me as if I were insane, but at least when he does have to get pills, he remembers the cheese. I do the same with the dog.

When I first brought my dog home from the shelter, she was quite ill & was put on a course of antibiotics. I had never given a dog a pill before, so listened to the experts who said to hide the pill in a piece of food. She ate the food, then spit out the pill. I made a fuss of beating her to the pill, & sure enough she ran for it, thinking it was another of those do not touch items. I saw her swallow & was quite proud of myself. That's when she spit the pill at me - she'd taken the coating off. Then, I decided to just open her mouth, & stick the pill in - she hid it under her tongue, then waited til she thought I wasn't looking & spit it out behind her food dish. I finally managed to get the pill down her throat, after an hour and a half.

andit, aren't there some pills that you just cannot crush? that have to be taken whole?

here's another tip. put the pill in the side of their mouth (way at the back) hold their mouth closed and then blow in their face. sometimes it works. the blowing makes the cat swallow (i guess it's like a gulping reflex from fear?)

i stress SOMETIMES, cause it never worked on cat we had but that was the vets suggestion, like i said, now i take them in and get them to do it if the hubby isn't around.

That sounds like Kennel Cough. It's basically a bad cold & the only thing you can do it let it run its course, although the vet can give meds to help ease the symptoms.

Dogs can get kennel cough anywhere, not just kennels. They don't even necessarily need to meet a contagious dog face to face to catch it. If Mollie has kennel cough, the Benadryl won't do much. Just make sure she's eating & drinking properly. There is a vaccine you can give dogs to prevent kennel cough, but it doesn't cover all strains. My dog got it despite getting the vaccine at the shelter when I got her. She reacted the way I do with flu shots - the meds that are supposed to prevent the illness cause it.

In terms of allergies, does it come and go at different times of the year or is it constant? It could either be food or environmental.

Not sure about pills that cannot be crushed - I'm on a whole whack of pills & have never been told that, not that I crush pills. Maybe if it's a capsule? I know some vets will give you the pill in a different form which might help.

As for the blowing in the nose trick, it does work...for some. I tried it once with my dog & she sneezed all over my face. Yuck!

Oh, & it's not fear. It's more like that feeling you get when you get when you feel like you have to sneeze, but nothing is coming out. Sort of a half cough, half sneeze.

andit: i checked the cat this am, and her eyes were FINE! then after my son snuggled up with her (next to me) on the chair...her eyes began to water again.

am thinking it's that damn soap he's using, or the gillette facewash. both are heavily scented (?). her breathing is fine, and no other symptoms, except that one sneeze...

i am THOROUGHLY enjoying the beautiful sheep book. it's gorgeous. this is the best prize ever. and i can't believe it was low in pts, high quality compared to most of the prizes being offerred. and if i can't sleep, i got sheep to count. 40 of them to be exact.

Well I am finally back home. Man did I miss you guys!!! Me and the hairy ones have been at my mom's. My stepfather who passed in November had bought a car 46 days before he died, and she doesn't drive, so she wanted to get it put into the garage, which took 4 hours to straighten up to get the car in there lol. She is going to sell it so this way it won't be buried under snow. Also spent several days fixing stuff aroung her house and running her around doing lots of the legal stuff to change everything into her name. She still is on a party line and she nor none of her neighbours have computers or internet!! They are really out in the middle of now where. Although it was kind of nice to be free of the ol' PC, but I sure don't want to do it again any time soon.

My father passed away peacefully on Jan 18th. Thanks for all the prayers.

I have a LOT of catching up to do. You guys sure do talk!!!

Am sorry about your father's passing tick. It's comforting to know that he passed away the way he did. Sounds like you had a totally busy weekend. Must have been strange not having internet! Sounds like the twilight zone.
