It's been like this for a long time - the energy rates are regulated, so they became creative and added stuff like "delivery charges" which aren't regulated, so they can play with those rates as much as they want.

The debt retirement charge is the one that gets to me. Once the debt comes close to be paid off, they go into debt again.

Former Premier McGuinty extended the debt retirement charges to continue into 2018. Thought it was to wrap up around 2011/12? Guess we know how money for the cancelled Samsung green energy project might have been found...

Yes, anastasia, you have rates just a touch under 12 cents/kwh-three different rates, mind you.

Did you see the bit about Sask Power investing $1B to upgrade equipment? Rate application...

While cleaning up my subscribed threads file, I also found this thread. Have been wanting to put the Auditor General of Ontario's comments about hydro costs in the thread:
“People are paying more for hydro because this government arrogantly chose to ignore the advice of experts,” said NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.

Lysyk estimated consumers could end up paying $9.2 billion more for renewable energy over 20-year contracts issued under the Green Energy Act with guaranteed prices set at double the U.S. market price for wind and at 3.5 times the going rate for solar last year.

“With wind and solar prices around the world beginning to decline around 2008, a competitive process would have meant much lower costs,” she wrote, noting the government ignored advice from the Ontario Power Authority to seek bids for large renewable energy projects.

Chiarelli countered that the green energy measures were “ahead of the wave” in helping with climate change and a new competitive process for large renewable energy projects will be announced early in the new year.

“Prices are going to be down very dramatically.”

Let's see a break on those hydro rates, please.

It's coming soon. In the news yesterday, there was a report of how they've been found to be gouging us for years now

I'd like to know how much of the $37B was applied to the old hydro debt retirement and how much went to the cancelled energy project with Samsung or the solar energy program where owners sold electricity back to the power supplier.

Ontarians-many of your electricity suppliers are on the Time of Use billing system. Guess what? The Times of Use shift to Summer hours until November. So avoid weekdays from 11am-5pm if possible (peak rate).

ha ha yes @Ciel I will sit still in the dark with nothing running or plugged in ( agh!! Phantom power !) and wait until 5 p.m. to begin my day.......all summer long.

Isn't that the cruelest joke Hydro plays on anyone who is at home during the day??

At least I can breathe a little easier about starting dinners before 7 PM. With two little ones, it's now a big deal to keep on schedule!

Every time you all mention this it makes me very thankful we don't have it-kind of a pain to have to plan everything around when rates are affordable.

Sometimes that timeframe is the best time to get home cooking/baking done (with windows open, of course) so when all family members are home for suppertime, there is less chance of heat conflict when we are all in the house but it's too hot to do anything. Best sunshine time for line drying clothes too. I gave up posting the Times of Use chart on the washer downstairs because it got ignored.

Can you believe the flack I got for turning off the power bar button on April 15 when the power went off? My sibling gave me grief the next day but Mom would not have gone to bed that prior night for fear the TV would come back on when the power was restored. I shut off the button and said "go to bed." He's lucky I know what most electronic sounds are in the house when HE'S NOT HOME and does not care that our parents act like helpless birds when they hear the sounds.

I will raise the issue of electronics recycling with brother as a community group is holding an event in late May in Ancaster (last weekend of the month, Hamilton).
