Public School
Uniform $25 per shirt, $50 per pants and gym uniform(think you can have just one of each)
yearly fee - $110
supplies - $100 apporx. (don't forget scientific calculators are not cheap)
school bag $10 (must be the one supplied by the school) yes it's a scam and you cannot have any other one to carry books from class to class, they rip in about 2 weeks from the weight of the books and I bought and outside one which has lasted the year, when he is caught with it he must remove all his books from it and carry them
trips - none he refuses to go on any good thing because the sec. 2 trip this year was Toronto (almost $400)
intown trips - $15 trip to National film board
workbooks $100
YAY! for free education and public school
Oh yes and Summer school - $150 per course, for the older kids retake exams are $300!!! Imagine if your kid needs to retake more than one or if you have multiple kids.
School pics. $50 (luckily he didn't want them, they were horrible anyways)
Bus pass $20 per month
Cafeteria lunch - $3.25 a day (the only thing I have no complaints about) good food, cheap and no junk allowed, not even fries, pizza every fridayLast edited by Patty Smyth; Tue, Jun 8th, 2010 at 02:40 PM.

Nope this is public school.
Uniforms are my pet peeve. Totally unecessary. No proof it makes the kids perform better, don't buy the "easier to identify" students in the school garbage. The school makes LOTS of money from the sale of them.
10% kickback. figure my sons school average student needs new stuff every year $200 approx. x 1300 students figure that out = cash grab
meanwhile I have 2x the laundry and I am obliged to buy from one place!! Double scam!

I really don't mind the cafeteria because it would cost me way more than the approx. $20 a week I spend now to keep snack and lunch food supplies in the house. There are no microwaves at school.

I do not get the uniform thing either. 'dress code' I think would be enough 0 for example - no belly shirts, no daisy dukes etc.

Patty, those basic costs are pretty similar to what it's like here - doesn't matter if it's for public or separate (Catholic) schools. School fees start varying more at high school, depending upon which classes are chosen (e.g. shop fees, materials, etc.).
High schoolers' bus pass is $48/mo as of last year, probably more by now.
Lunches - for some reason, though he said the food at the caf was decent, son liked to take lunch from home, sammies and stuff.
Uniforms - gee, I only wished they would have had them! Would have been absolutely wonderful!
If the school bags they make you buy are dinky, that's just crazy. It was hard enough finding backpacks which were sturdy enough so he wouldn't go through one every few months. Luckily with trial and error, found a few good brands that once I would reinforce by sewing, actually lasted a good long while!
