This is true in ways lots of people don't expect. It is not uncommon for the meat department to take cuts of beef that are on the point of expiring off the shelf, grind them up and repackage them as ground beef because the turnover is so high and they can usually sell it before it goes bad. I know people who have worked in the meat department in three of the large grocery chains and they've all seen it done. You really have no idea what part of the animal you are getting, or how long that meat has actually been sitting on the shelf, in one form or another.

i buy most of my meat from a very busy small butcher, i'm going to have to ask for non-bum ground next time, to be on the safe side.

styrofoam cow bum, LMAO!! this thread is hilarious, especially because no-one knows what happens when food is handled of any type...i have my FoodSafe certification too because i work in the food industry, and if you went and read your local health authority website on their food inspection/site inspections of all restaurants in your area, you'd never eat at some places again...I'm talking cross contamination in restaurants of raw foods/juices and cooked foods, expired leftovers, rodent feces, etc...if we all read about those things, we'd all stop eating..lol

you're right 911, i think ignorance is bliss sometimes.
wouldn't you agree tho that these food processing companies get away with a lot more than most of would like.

I, too, will stick with styrofoam cow bum because I like to see that it's a healthy pink and fluffy!
For the non-meatatarians, e-coli has been found in lots of produce like spinach, cantaloupe, sprouts, etc. At least with meat, I know I will be cooking it to a high enough temp to kill the little buggers....

Don't forget people touching their clothes/face/hair than touching the food!

Oh ya.. I'm paranoid.. but everyone does it.. I wash than use medical gloves if I have the smallest of cuts on my hands before I touch food of any kind if I'm making a meal. Most people won't ... =/
