    • Cream Cheese Pastry Recipe:
      1 Cup Flour
      3/4 Teaspoon Baking Powder
      Pinch of Salt
1/2 Margarine Softened (We use butter)
1 Package (3 ounces) Cream Cheese Softened
      2 Teaspoons Sugar

In a small bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. In a large bowl mix margarine, cream cheese and sugar until well combined.
Stir in flour mixture until well blended.

Baking temp and times all depends on the recipe and how you are using the pastry. We usually use it to make mini butter tarts.

    White Bread
    by dreamcatcher1962

    • White Bread
      3 Cups Warm water
      3 Tbsp dry active yeast
      3 tsp salt
      1/2 cup white sugar
      4 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
      8 cups of flour.

      1. Mix water, yeast, salt, oil, sugar & 4 cups of flour together. Let sponge rise until double in size.
( I usually leave it 90 minutes and cover the bowl with plastic wrap)

      2. Add the remaining 4 cups of flour kneading until smooth, place in a greased bowl and let rise another 90 minutes. (once I grease the bowl, I rotate the dough to ensure is has been greased all around, then cover the bowl again with plastic wrap)

      3. Punch down & let rest a few minutes then divide into 3 and shape into loaves.
      Bake at 350 for 35 - 40 minutes ( I do mine on convection 325 degrees for 20 -25 minutes)
      Best of luck

    Egg Roll Filing
    by lecale

    • I make what dh calls "egg roll stuffing" with coleslaw mix, bean sprouts, shredded carrot, thin slices of green pepper, green onions, oyster sauce (asian ketchup, it does not taste like oysters, just salty/savoury/sweet) I use a whole bag of coleslaw mix and bean sprouts each and get 8-10 cups out of it...so, uh, don't use whole bags lol

For a meaty version I would just use ground chicken or pork with that

Sometimes I will make the roast pork that you get at the buffet that is red on the outside: just marinade pork in soy sauce, sugar, touch of 5 spice powder (1/4 tsp or less) and touch of red colour (optional) and roast then slice

      Spring Rolls
    • by SimplifiedMommyTips
    • I have different way of making spring rolls, for the meaty ones, 1 lb of ground pork or chicken, 1/2 cup of sweet chili sauce ( you can buy it from chinese or asian store) minced 1 carrot, sometimes when I get lazy I just grate it , minced ginger, season it with salt and pepper then deep fry.
Another recipe that I used from asian/chinese store a lumpia shanghia mix ( filipino mix), ground pork, minced carrot, minced garlic then deep fry.

      edit:
      veggie version:
minced garlic, chopped onions, julienne carrots, cabbage, green beans, ground pork, salt and pepper or a little bit of soya sauce just saute a bit veggies must be a bit crunchy, not soggy.

another veggie version; same ingredients above just add steamed bean noodles and you have the stuffing for your spring roll.

sauce: we make back home and even here is white vinegar ( only vinegar we have available back home that we can afford but you can use apple cider vinegar ) little bit of soya sauce and crushed garlic, the garlic opens up your appetite even more.

    Celebration Chicken
    by jasperandchar

1 package of Dry Onion Soup
    1/2 cup of Ketchup
    1/4 cup of brown sugar
    1/2 cup of water

mix all together and roll your chicken around to get them all saucy and I also add small chunks of patatoes (not in the recipe) however the patoes get all saucy......yummy.

Bake at 375 for 50 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.

    Perogie

    by Caseythegoalie

The infamous super-secret perogie recipe from three generations of Ukranians: (super easy)
    4 Cups of flour
    1 tsp salt
    -----------sift together---------

Make a "hole" in the middle of the powder.
    Add:
    1 Cup warm water
    1 Cup warm milk
    1 egg yolk
    1/4 cup oil

mix all together. Add flour as desired.
When filled, drop in a pot of boiling water (add a bit of oil). When they rise to the top, they are done! (usually 45-60 seconds or so)
Then you just fry them up in a pan when you want to eat them.

    • Peel and cut about 8 apples. Add to slow cooker with 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 sugar (I use honey, it's better for you and so tasty!) and some cinnamon and nutmeg. Cook for 10ish hours. Stir. Eat.

I'll often set it going before bed and wake up to a yummy smelling house. Then we add it to oatmeal in the morning. So, so yummy

I got this recipe years ago from Kraft. It`s become one of our favourites.

        2 cups diced uncooked potatoes
        1/2 c sliced carrots
        1/2 c sliced celery
        1/4 c onion
        1 tsp salt
        dash of pepper
        2 c boiling water
        1/4 c margerine
        1/4 c flour
        2 c milk
        2 1/2 c colby cheese shredded
        1 c cubed ham.

cook potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, salt, pepper and water 10 min. Do not drain.Make white sauce with margerine, flour and milk. Add cheese, ham and undrained veggies.

    • Doughboys aka Dumplings

      1 cup flour
      2 teaspoons baking powder
      1/2 teaspoon of salt
      --------------------

      1/2 cup milk
      2 tablespoons oil

Mix dry ingredients in a bowl. Combine milk and oil together; add all at once to dry ingredients, stirring until just moistened.
Drop from tablespoon atop bubbling stew. Cover tightly; let mixture return to boiling. Reduce heat
DO NOT LIFT LID simmer 12 to 15 minutes.

I always double the recipe because they are not enough to suit us. Make sure you have enough liquid as they will absorb some of your gravy and I drop larger spoonfuls of dough to make them bigger. I usually cook for the 14 minutes. I like them cut with butter and gravy on them. You can also reheat in the microwave but they are much better the first time around.

    Pizza Dough
    by dreamcatcher1962

    • 1 pkg (2 1/4 tsp) dry active yeast
      1 cup warm water
2 1/2 cups flour * I ususally only use 2 1/4 cups and if needed, will use the other 1/4 cup to roll the dough out.
      2 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
      1 tsp sugar
      1 tsp salt.

Mix the water, sugar, & yeast together.
Let sit for about 10 minutes until the yeast goes foamy.

Then add in the salt, oil & flour.
Knead it until it is elastic. Then give your bowl a very light coating of oil and swirl the ball of dough around in it to coat the surface of the dough with the oil. Cover it with saran wrap (the top of the bowl) and let sit for about 15 minutes.

Divide the dough in half and roll out to fit your pizza baking tray.

      Pineapple Angel Food cake
      by SassyAshley

      • 1 can diced pineapple (with juice)
        1 box Angle Food Cake

Mix the above ingredients (only the two ingredients above do not add additional ingredients listed on cake mix box) and just mix by hand do not use a mixer. Pour into a 9 x 13 baking dish and cook at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. The pineapple reacts to the cake mix and makes a light fluffy cake.

        • The Soda bread is a rather heavy white bread that uses baking soda instead of yeast.
It does not rise like traditional white bread but is more flat.

If you are interested in trying it here's the recipe. This one's pretty easy too.

          Irish Soda Bread
          3 Cups All Purpose Flour
          1/2 tsp salt
          1 1/2 tsp Baking soda
          1 tsp Cream of Tartar
          2 Tbsp White Sugar

Sift all dry ingredients together. Mix and lift between fingers about 15 times to allow air to mix in.

          Next
1 3/4 cups Buttermilk or I use 7 Tbsp Buttermilk Powder with enough water to make 1 3/4 cups of Buttermilk.
Add that to your dry ingredients to make a soft dough. Do Not Knead.

Roll into a ball* Correction, Dump dough onto a well floured surface sprinkle more flour on top of the dough and rotate it until all area's are covered with flour. ( the dough is sticky and you want to be able to cut it and move it onto your griddle.- I use a pizza cutter) Don't mix in the extra flour you just want to coat it so that you can work with it.
flatten with your hands until it is approx 1/2 inch thick.

There are 2 methods of cooking. I use the one below.
I usually use some extra flour if it is too wet, to make sure it doesn't stick to my rolling pin.
I roll it out to about 1/2 in thickness and then cut it into triangle.(shape doesn't really matter, whatever works for you)

*At this point, I use an electric griddle at medium heat (350 ?) and cook it on each side about 6 minutes.
It will puff up when cooking.
Then put it on a cookie cooling rack wrapped in a clean dish towel. This is important as it helps to keep some of the moisture in it to prevent the crust from going hard.
When ready to eat, slice it through the middle like you would and english muffin.
You can toast it or just eat it as is with whatever topping you like.

          * The second way to cook it is by baking it in the oven.
If you want to do it this way, do not roll it out with the rolling pin.
Once you have the round ball of dough, take a cookie sheet and lightly flour it.

Dump the ball of dough onto the cookie sheet, flour the top of it lightly and press it down to flatten it somewhat with your hands. Cut and X into the center of it right across the top of the dough (not all the way through)
Bake at 350 until a toothpick comes out clean , approx 25-30 minutes.

Once done, again I would wrap it in a clean dish towel , place on a cooling rack and allow to cool.
This can be frozen, just make sure you put it in a freezer bag.

      • We use the "flower bud" shape that I was taught when I was little.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wUiwMOa-BI

I tried to insert the link, but it didn't work for some reason. This video is just about the folding, depending on the age of your little ones.

I use a package of shrimp (or 200 g or so), de-veined and quartered for the little ones or cut into eighths if you're using large tiger shrimp
1 bunch of green onion (washed and diced)
        1 - 1.5 lb lean ground pork
1 egg (optional, Dad always puts it in)
white ground pepper to taste (I've been leaving it out for the past few years)
salt to taste (I've been leaving it out for low-sodium diets - the broth has enough sodium)

1 additional egg to seal the wontons, beaten
1 package of wonton wrappers (thin squares, likely found in the soy milk or tofu section of your local grocery store)

Mix all ingredients and spoon into individual wonton wrappers. Make wontons as per video, sealing the edges with your finger dipped in the egg. Freeze. Boil when ready to eat. That's it!

      1. In a medium sized bowl combine cream cheese, mayo, cheddar cheese, flakes of ham, and green onions with an electric mixer.
      2. Cut top off French bread loaf and pull out the soft inside of the loaf. Cut up these pieces of bread and reserve for later use.
      3. Fill hollowed out loaf of bread with cheese mixture and smooth out. Wrap loaf in tinfoil, leaving top exposed. Bake in 350F oven for 1 -1 1/2hrs. 5 minutes before the loaf is done cooking, sprinkle with parmesan cheese and put back in oven.
      4. Serve with the pieces of bread and crackers. Don’t forget to eat the “bowl” as the dip is almost eaten.

mix the sauce and add in the chicken, cover the chicken in the sauce also! Cook on low for 8 hours and serve over rice, the chicken will literally fall off the bones. I drizzle some of the sauce on the rice also.

      Chicken Dinner
      by sweet sparrow

4 carrots, cut into 1,5 cm pieces
4 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1,5 cm pieces
      8 shallots, cut in half
      4 chicken thighs, bone-in
      1 sprig rosemary, fresh
      2 cloves garlic, pressed
      1/3 cup maple syrup
      salt to taste
      ground pepper to taste

      1. Prepare the vegetables: Cut the carrots and potatoes into pieces, about 1,5 cm; cut the shallots in half, then lay out the vegetables on a sheet or an oven-proof dish. Add the chicken pieces, rosemary, and pressed garlic. Pour the syrup on top, then mix all the pieces well to coat them thoroughly with the syrup. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
      2. Cook in the middle of the oven until it is golden-coloured, about 40 min. Turn the pieces halfway through the cooking. You may need to add a few spoonfuls of water to prevent the pieces from sticking to the sheet.

4 Tbsp coconut oil, melted (you can use other oil if you'd prefer)
    1/2 cup coconut flour, sifted

1/2 cup finely chopped or ground pecans (optional--or replace with nut of your choice!)

Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir until you achieve a relatively smooth batter. Stir in nuts. Let batter sit while you either generously spray your muffin pan or line with paper muffin cups. Fill muffin cups 3/4 full and bake for approximately 20 minutes until golden brown. 2 cups self rising flour
1/4 cup butter (I use olive oil)
1/2 cup sour cream (I used yogurt--it was vanilla that needed to be used)
        1/2 cup sprite/7 up/lemon flavored soda
(To this I added 1/4 up grated cheese and put a little on top like the biscuits at Red Lobster)
The biscuits are a little on the wet side--I plopped the dough in a 8" square baking dish and smoothed it out a bit--then just cut squares to eat.

Bake at 400 for 20 min. or until brown on the edges

        Banana Chocolate Chip Bread

        2 ripe bananas (mashed)
        1 box yellow cake mix
1 package banana cream pudding and pie filling
        1/2 cup water
        1/2 cup oil
        4 eggs
1 cup semi-sweet miniature chocolate chips

        Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees*
grease 2 loaf pans (bottom and sides)

        1. Mash the 2 ripe bananas with a fork
        2. Mix all ingredients (including the mashed bananas) except for the chocolate chips
        3. Stir in chocolate chips (the directions say to pour the batter into the greased pans before you stir in the chocolate chips, but I find it's easier just to mix them in the bowl with the batter. If you pour the batter in the pans first, just add 1/2 cup chips to each pan and stir)
        4. Pour into 2 greased loaf pans
        5. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes (If you are using a dark pan you may want to cut the heat back just a smudge.)

Recipes for household cleaners (detergent, cleaners, etc)

    Liquid Laundry Detergent
    by matty's Mom

    • 3 tbsp of borax
      3 tbsp of washing soda
      2 tbsp of Blue Dawn
      6 boiling cups of water
put into a container & shake until all is dissolved. I use a 4+L old purex container and double up the recipe. I add ~2 cupfuls to my dispenser.

Some versions of this call for 4c of water, but I find that I get crystals on the bottom of the jug if I use less. I use this in my HE washer and I am generally quite happy. It isn't great on bad grease spots, so I just apply a diluted dawn spray on them. Is it as good as store bought? Honestly, it isn't tide. But it is SOOOO cheap to make. It cost me $13.00 for everything and I still have half of the borax, and washing soda left over. The dawn- well I use that for other things, so I always have that in the house. It is as good as gain, purex etc.

    • citrus vinegar. I use leftover orange rinds and soak them in vinegar for 2 weeks. Strain. Then to clean, I dilute it in half with water and put it in a spray bottle. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked.

I use it undiluted as a rinse agent in my dishwasher. Although I've heard that can ruin the compartment-so I'm not sure about that.

        No-grate Liquid Laundry Detergent

        3 TBS Borax,
        2 TBS super washing soda,
2 Tbs Blue Dawn dish detergent.
Put into gallon jug. Pour in 4 cups boiling water and swirl until powders are dissolved. Let liquid cool, then fill almost to top with cold water. Bubbles will foam out a bit. This is thin, but Dawn does get the grease out. Use ½ to 1 cup per load.

        Homemade Stain Remover (Shout)
        1. 2/3 cups Dawn Dishwashing Liquid
        2. 2/3 cups ammonia
        3. 6 Tblsp baking soda
        4. 2 cups warm water
Mix everything together and pour into a spray bottle, OR, use an empty dish detergent squeeze bottle, as sometimes the spray bottles will clog up.
Before you go to use it…if it’s been sitting for awhile…give it a good shake.
To use: spray on stains as you normally would. Maybe let it “soak in” for a few minutes at least. Then launder as usual. If you leave on more than 20 hrs it may cause fading; so don’t let sit. Otherwise it is safe to use on colored clothes.

Okay how about a challenge this month?????

Anyone???? So instead of a weekly weigh in per say - we way in our savings each week or bi-weekly whatever your case may be related to your grocery expenses!!!

It's easy to get bummed out with the prices & costs of groceries
but really we forget about the time, efforts and all means we go through to accomplish our budgets....So let's cheer each other on and recognize our accomplishments.

Keep your grocery receipts and add up the savings (coupons used, pming, sale prices vs. reg prices) and do weekly tallies???

This way we can applaud/cheer about our frugal savings?

    Happy Canada Day!!

I'm up for a challenge. I need a very frugal month after the last 3 week. Uncle leaves on thursday then it's financial recovery time. The freezer is going to be our main source of food for the next month. Especially for DH, there is lots of meat in there.

Really need to review our food budget and go back to cash again. We've been "lawless" a bit with family here. Time to buckle down!

I am really hoping the weather co operates with our budget, having no AC and these heat waves are causing a lot of eat out. The heat really gets to both me and mom so the chance to eat in AC alone gets us out of the house, normally we are more about the take out but when it gets hot we go out to eat. We have done tons of prep for this week so hopefully we can stick to our plan and live off what we have pre prepped.

We ate out this morning...firemen`s breakfast. $32 for 4 of us. Definitely not frugal but it goes for a good cause.

On the other hand, yesterday at Zehrs I got 2 Chapman`s ice cream and a Balltop pack...used 2 $5 coupons. Free ice cream tastes better somehow. Also used some other coupons so waited forever for an over ride. There was only one guy in line behind me and he didn`t complain.
