Chris Alexander, Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and Conservative candidate for Ajax, is suspending his re-election campaign.
Alexander is returning to Ottawa to focus on the migrant crisis in Europe.

Amid what has been called the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War, the immigration minister says Canada has taken in "approximately 2,500" Syrian refugees to date.

"The numbers grow quickly through private sponsorship and government assistance. We also have brought over 20,000 Iraqi refugees," Chris Alexander said on CBC's Power & Politics Wednesday.

Canada is in North America last time I checked. Anyone remember how many Vietnamese refugees Canada took in 1976? yes over 100k

Here is the funny thing, if the country as it is now isn't tolerant of visible minorities (people can deny it all they want online), how on earth would they put up with taxpayer dollars housing and feeding an influx of refugees? Yes, this is a question that needs to be answered first. The amount of times I have heard in passing people making xenophobic comments about immigrants...and to think their parents / grandparents / great grandparents were once immigrants to this country.

Germany - plans to take in 300k
Sweden (country of 8 million people) - plans to take 100k
UK (country of over 60 million) - plans to take 5k

10,00 Icelanders offer their homes to Syrian refugees

Ten thousand Icelanders have offered to welcome Syrian refugees into their homes, as part of a Facebook campaign launched by a prominent author after the government said it would take in only a handful.

After the Icelandic government announced last month that it would only accept 50 humanitarian refugees from Syria, Bryndis Bjorgvinsdottir encouraged fellow citizens to speak out in favour of those in need of asylum. In the space of 24 hours, 10,000 Icelanders – the country’s population is 300,000 – took to Facebook to offer up their homes and urge their government to do more.

    • EU countries 'should have their funding cut if they do not take their fair share of migrants'
    • Britain, France and Germany urge EU to set up migrant reception centres

"I'm a single mother with a 6-year-old son... We can take a child in need. I'm a teacher and would teach the child to speak, read and write Icelandic and adjust to Icelandic society. We have clothes, a bed, toys and everything a child needs. I would of course pay for the airplane ticket," wrote Hekla Stefansdottir in a post.

UKIP candidate blames greedy Syrian parents for child's death

A Twitter account seemingly run by Peter Bucklitsch, who ran as a Ukip candidate for Wimbledon in May, shocked followers this afternoon with the message: “The little Syrian boy was well clothed and well fed. He died because his parents were greedy for the good life in Europe. Queue jumping costs.”
Mr Bucklitsch, who has been approached by the Standard for comment, apparently followed up the controversial tweet with the message: “Predictable unthinking outrage. Turkey is not a place where the family was in danger. Leaving that safe place put the family in peril.”
Tragic photographs of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi lying dead on a Turkish beach yesterday shocked the world.
Mr Bucklitsch, a former Lib Dem candidate in Nigel Farage's target seat of South Thanet, was beaten in this year's election by incumbent Tory Stephen Hammond.

Tima Kurdi says application she made to Cdn govt (one that was rejected) was for her OTHER brother Mohammed, not Abdullah & his fam #cdnpoli
In other words Harper is not responsible for Aylan's death

Taoiseach says ‘not realistic’ to set figure for refugees

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said it is “not realistic” to set a figure immediately on the number of refugees Ireland can take.
EU justice ministers will meet to discuss the migration crisis on September 14th.
“The past experience is that countries will not measure up if they’re asked to do so purely voluntarily,” said Mr Kenny. “So it may well be that they are going to have to work out a formula here to say what numbers are appropriate for each individual country, and then get on with having a plan and a strategy that can deal with that catastrophic human situation.”

Mr Kenny said he instucted Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald “to go to the meeting with a flexible mind here. We’ve got to be realistic in what we can contribute. We’re not within the protocol, but we are opting in because of our personality and tradition.”
Speaking after meeting with President Francois Hollande in Paris, Mr Kenny said the photograph of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi lying dead on the beach at Bodrun was “absolutely shocking.”
“Any parent could see that child in their own arms. Here’s a body of a young boy; a life lost, potential wasted, washed up on a beach like driftwood. That picture more than any I’ve seen of all the tragedies may well shock political processes into taking action here, in terms of the stream of migrants and the causes that underlie that.”
