In Saskatchewan, it's a statutory holiday. Schools are closed. It has been as long as I was in school, but I could not find dates on this...

Most things,including schools,malls,grocery stores,banks are always closed here in Nova Scotia.The only things open are Timmies,SDM,fast food places.

It is a Statuatory holiday here in BC too...schools, governmebt offices, banks, all closed...even some small businesses close if they want to..my work is open, but I had the choice to work or not, so since hubby is working, I decided to work too, AFTER the Rememberance Day ceremonies.

Yes in Ontario and yes they go to school that day, but they had a holiday this past Friday for no reason. At the schools in our area, they do a service for it.

I get the day off, kinda like other work places floater day, but the hubby has to work.

I really think it should be a statutory holiday in Canada.

When I was in elementary it was in the Protestant School Board anyways.

here in Alberta it is a stat holiday and I am not sure how many things are closed but schools are. On the radio I have been hearing that some schools have more than one day off as well but I am not sure which ones. They just say on the radio that for the children who are off the rest of the week.... so here it seems that some schools have more than one day off. I don't know why personally but oh well. I think that I am on the fence on whether it should be a stat holiday because someone mentioned that kids learn more about it in school and that could very well be and it would be neat if it is done that way. Here in Alberta when I went to school we would do stuff for remembrance day and learn about it even if it wasn't on the actual day but I don't remember having a day off so is it relatively new? maybe I did have it off but I totally don't remember! lol

i'm from Ontario too and the schools are open but they do have assemblies we used to have rememerace day off when we were very little but they took it away they figured kids would learn more about it if they were in school

Our schools are open but they are having Remembrance services in the schools. One public school in our town takes the whole school to the services lead by the Legion. I think the reason they keep the schools open is because they don't want it to become "just another day off school" as most families, unfortunately, do not attend Remembrance Day Services and they feel that by keeping the children in schools they can keep the Remembrance of our Freedom fresh in the future generations minds.

It is a stat holiday in Nova Scotia, nothing is supposed to be open. But of course the odd gas station will be.

They had 2 min of silence at dd school but not at ds school. Odd, they are both in the same school district, both at secondary school.

My sons teacher had a moment of silence in their class but another kid said that when the teacher tried to do it all the kids started throwing things. A-holes. In Quebec in elementary schools they are more into it but by high school I don't think it goes over very well. I don't know if it's because there are so few anglos here or what? In Kevin's school I think it's 80% Italien heritage. All I know is it's pretty disgraceful the way it's treated in this province for the most part. I did see the official ceremony at McGill U today on t.v. and there were quite a few thousand but that is an english school. I don't know about the french schools. Not too kosher to be ralleying around the flag here still.

The protestors yesterday greeting Prince Charles said what an outrage it was for him to come to our country and presume to speak to Quebecers. He meant QUebec "The Country". Not Canada. There are many diehards still, more than you guys know.

When I lived in Ottawa I would go over to Quebec every once in awhile, Im not talking deep int Quebec more like Gatineau area and when I tried asking people for directions etc they would start speaking French to me...I would tell them sorry I don't speak French and they would walk away!
I worked at the Ottawa Airport and I had one gentleman and I use the term loosley, ask me a question in french, I said sorry I don't speak french, he repeated himself...I repeated myself..after 3 times of telling him I do not speak French he told me in perfect english..."You should be ashamed of yourself for being so ignorant and not knowing Canada's offical language" I was like and just walked away.
