I don't know where to vent this out but I will here. Yesterday I went to the new Walmart near my home (yes another one, I have like 5 stores to choose from in the 10 km radius...3 of them Super Centres) but anyways I was in the produce area and I saw someone putting out some bananas. The box next to him had tons of singles where the bananas are still good just not in a bunch. Now being thrifty asked the guy where is your reduced produced area so I can get some of these bananas? Most stores will throw the singles in a bag and sell them as well for like $1 if not less. He said to me oh we don't have a reduced section we just throw these out. I was shocked and disgusted...why nothing is wrong with them I replied, he said yeah I know but even as employees we are not allowed to take them home, we can just eat them in the back storage room.
Now I was trying to find a store manager at this point to complain about the utter waste of food going on here but then I realized I was going to be late to pick my son up from his rec centre class so I let it go this time but next time I am there I will speak to someone about this.
Is it just me or is this not a super waste of food? With world hunger and the way the economy is right now why would any store be throwing away perfectly good bananas?
I always buy them in the reduced section for that reason, most of them are still yellow and not softened they are just singles...who the heck cares? My Loblaws and No Frills have them for anywhere from $.75 to $1 a bag depending on how many and I save a bundle...anyways just venting

I totally agree with you Amy...
Same for Tim's and Country Style - you could buy day old (even at the end
of the day) for $1 - they are no longer allowed to do that so they go in
the trash. Lots of waste.
At Loblaws last week, I was not impressed with the selection of oranges since
they were quite soft and they wouldn't reduce the price. The bananas were
ripe and wouldn't last more than a day or 2 but they wouldn't reduce the
price either. The reduced section on the shelf did not seem fit for consumption.
It's disgusting how so much food goes to waste.'Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.'

At Tim's though the employees at least are allowed to take them home and since my neighbour and hubby's aunt work there we usually end up with hours old donuts and muffins and their bread. The stuff is still fresh because they bake 3 times a day so it could only be 10 hours old if that when I get it. The muffins and bread I freeze in ziploc bags for lunches or days where I dont know what to do.

Lucky lady!!!!!
I totally agree about the wasted food - it's disgusting especially with so many that are in need! Surely they could reduce or donate instead of throw it out.
Thanks also for the word. Tried to give you rep but can't right now so will get you another time.
