The Halloween Fairy comes to our house each Halloween night.
After trick or treating our boys are allowed to go through their haul and pick about 10-15 treats from their bags. The rest of the candy is left in the bags and put outside for the Halloween Fairy.
She comes in the middle of the night and takes the candy and leaves a gift for each of them instead.
Our oldest is nearly 7 and he is still choosing to set his candy out for a gift rather than keep it all to eat.
I can't remember who gave us this idea but it's a great way to limit the kids' sugar intake while not making them feel ripped off by being limited to what they are allowed to eat.
Anyone else have the fairy come to their house? This thread is currently associated with: N/A

I dont think thats right.
Most kids spend at least 2 hours going door to door getting a workout for their candy. They are earning it technically.
Im more to the idea of portioning it out at all. My parents did that for me,
each day after halloween I was allowed a certain amount of candy to take with me in my lunches and during the weekend I was only allowed to eat some.
I turned out fine, and I respect the way they treated halloween candy.
They didnt want me to get obese from eating too much candy but they still let me
eat small amounts at a time.
Even if you are substituting their candy with a gift, what do u do with the candy? eat it yourself? lol kidding but i dont know about most kids but I LOVED candy and I would think most children would not want to give it up.
Maybe I dont know what its like because I dont have children, but Im still young enough to remember my childhood.

Eaxch to their own. I see where you are coming from.
However, a few years back for a couple years I went trick or treating with a bunch of youth (I was a young adult helping the youth pastor, lol)... we kept NONE of thw candy we ALL collected--it was donated to one of those "candy drives"... I forget exactly where it went, but locally it was put to great use.

I love this idea!! Never heard of it before but I'll definitely be discussing this with my hubby. DS is only 20 months old now so a little young for candy at the moment! I have already been trying to come up with ideas for something to do besides the traditional trick-or-treating for our kids...I'm not against the whole door to door thing and quite enjoyed it as a kid myself but really, it's far too much candy/junk, the weather usually sucks and I find fewer and fewer homes are shelling out these days anyways. I think I'd prefer my kids spend their halloween at a party or haunted house type thing...I guess I have just a bit more time before I need to figure that out...

Won't be doing it here. Loved trick or treating here, and live in a great neighborhood for it. DD love collecting her loot, and she gets it a little at a time. I remember as a kid having my stash, and loved comparing the treats we had in our lunches with the other kids at school.
gone shopping!

I used to be allowed to have three pieces on Halloween night. I'd hang the bag full of candy on the doorknob in my room, and I'd only take a piece after supper if I'd asked first. It would last a long time, and the end, a lot of it would need to be thrown out. I guess I was too much of a good kid!
I remember how the daughter of a woman my mother was friends with used to have her candy restricted. Even birthday cakes at her house were made with severely reduced sugar, and the girl had no medical problems to warrant it. When we were about five and she had come over to play, she spotted a box of After Eight mint patties on my dresser. I, of course, was allowed one a day after supper, and only if I asked. Having the box in my room was no temptation. Well, this girl just kind of went crazy like some sort of red-haired chocolate-eating dervish. She was making animal-like noises as she gobbled them up. The wrappers were flying as she stuffed the chocolate in as fast as she possibly could. I mean, she was so out of control, it was scary. I was terrified by the way she was eating them. It wasn't even that she was eating my treats... the state she was in was just downright frightening. I must have screamed or done something, because my mother seemed to appear in the doorway in an instant. She had to speak slowly and calmly as she tried to get the girl away from the chocolate and break her out of her wild state. Her eyes were actually glazed, and it took her a few minutes to come to her senses. I've never seen anything like it.

It teaches children the value of things. They WORKED to get the candy and now they can EXCHANGE it for other goods. Just like you and I work for money.
I think it's a GREAT lesson and it's learned in a fun way! I don't think it's used in the form of control. TM2C
BRILLIANT!
