My Mom used to talk about loving Saskatoon berries...she was born and raised in Winnipeg...do they typically grow wild? Do people grow them in their gardens?

Lynn, yes, you find the best ones out in the country, in the bush. Around here, people don't share where they find them, they have "secret" places!

However, there are saskatoon berry bushes you can buy at nurseries.

I've never had perogies with saskatoon berries. So is that a dessert, or ? I would love a recipe!

Yes like Natalka said they grow wild and people grow them. I have one large bush that produces berries and two tiny ones that someday will. The larger one I only got a few berries from, the birds got most of them. Where I picked them there are tons of bushes so they must grow fairly easily from seed in the right conditions, though they grow pretty slowly.

Well, we do eat them with sour cream and sugar - so kinda dessert. Usually we would have some savoury ones first then dig into those with saskatoons. I make them with cherries, too.

Perogy dough - makes five dozen

    3/4 cup warm water
    2 Tbsp oil
    1 beaten egg
    2 1/2 cups flour
    1/2 tsp salt

Mix and knead together til dough is smooth. Cover and let stand for one hour before rolling.
Roll about 1/8 inch thick, cut in three inch rounds. Cover with slightly damp towel so they don't dry out while you are filling some.
Put filling in centre of dough, not to edges, fold over, and seal edges tightly and pinch all the way around. Sometimes twice!
Boil about 10 minutes - totally depends upon how big you make them and what the filling is.
(If there is leftover dough, just cut in pieces with a knife, and cook along with perogies)

For fruit filling, put washed and dried fruit in a bowl, add some flour to coat a bit. For cherries, I cut them into about thirds, saskatoons I leave whole.

    ----
After they are cooked, remove with slotted spoon to roaster, put some melted butter over to keep them from sticking.

    ---

For the fruit ones, you serve them warm - top with sour cream and sprinkle sugar on top - Yum!

Thank you....'secret places', eh? Sounds like the blueberry patches people have around here in the wild, but won't share! Who can blame them..they're so great growing wild. Smaller than those huge things you can buy in the grocery stores, but oh my...ten times the flavour! We used to go picking with Mom and Dad, then we got too old to 'bother', so Dad want out on his own and brought back tons! I helped Mom clean and wash them... Had to do something, right?

Nat...reminds me of the perogies Mom used to make...apple and cinnamon, blueberry of course, and omg...saurkraut!!! The apple ones were my favourite, esp fried in butter the next day...I'm pretty sure they make them in heaven...

Yummy! Saskatoon pies and jarred berries were favorite childhood sweets. Who needed store candy when you had these yummy treats?
Slippers, today I am thankful for slippers.

I'm thankful for couponing. Every time I go into my stash to get cat litter, toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste, cleaning supplies, coffee, pasta, etc. I am thankful. I think it would be difficult financially without it.

Despite of all the negativity I have been getting, I can always turn to friends who put positive energy back into me. Thanks to them all!

Been way too many years since I lost my Dad, but I am grateful to have a few lovely memories of the man he was before alcohol destroyed him.
